If only he had been caught with his pants down in a hotel room with a cheap hooker, Blago would be forced to stand down. But the shame of pay-to-play Chicago politics don't seem to be able to coerce him into a tidy resignation.
Also: I made a typo yesterday, so who am I? But "agains thim"? Please fix!
The Senate seat may just be the smoke -- the actual fire can be found in his threat to hold back $8 million in state funds from a children's hospital unless they wet his beak.
The case was brought early by Fitz to prevent further tarnishing of the Obama presidency before it even started. Fitz is a great lawyer and an even better political animal. Witness Scoots going down.
Does federal law recognize attempting to commit a crime as a crime in itself? Can't they get him on attempt to engage in conspiracy? I can't imagine Fitzgerald would have come out, guns a-blazin', if he didn't think they could convict this idiot on something. Because that would look, like, really bad.
@OrneryBabe: I'm thinking the conspiracy charge might be good. They don't need to prove specific intent or an overt act under fed law which adopts common law. They have the Chief of Staff on tape and need to flip him against Rod. I think the rest of the case is garbage.
Add whatever Fitzgerald gets through the grand jury to what he hasn't already disclosed and I'd bet Blago -- the least sympathetic character since Sarah Palin -- is toast. There's always conspiracy, right?
I question the accuracy of everything about this case based on the rendition from the court room artist. The part is on the wrong side. If something so blatant and obvious can be wrong, clearly, we may be mistaken as to the facts of the matter.
As Sally Field said in Soapdish, "The only thing I'm guilty of is love, love in the first degree." This doesn't really relate but I've always wanted to repeat it in some capacity.
I continue to have a serious lawyer girl hard on for Patrick Fitzgerald. I call him "Gerald Fitzpatrick" when I'm speaking in code around the office with other girl lawyers.
@sweetpiece: Zell is already down -- he's the despised overlord of a $12 billion in the hole bankrupt newspaper empire. Now you want the old man thrown in The Hole?
