And so he goes, from No. 6 to No. 6-feet-under. Great show, great actor.

McGoohan also played against Peter Falk in two Columbo episodes and hit the ball so hard that it's still travelling. Those two dudes played off each other magically.

Was the little butler a good guy or a bad guy? If memory serves, didn't he ride out of The Village with Number 6 in that truck in the final episode?

@jbk: A lot of things happen in the final 2 episodes that really don't make a lot of linear sense.

@DanielMurphysLaw: Almost nothing was linear in the 60s. Some of those Avengers episodes were pretty damn strange.

Come on people, you're all ignoring Patrick McGoohan's best and most famous role: SILVER STREAK!

Gene Wilder, Jill Clayburgh, Richard Pryor and Patrick McGoohan as the villain (with a little help from the dude who played Jaws). Can't go wrong. That was my first exposure to him and I've seriously always remembered him for that role.

@badasscat: Yeah I remember he called Richard Pryor the N word and Richard told him he'd slap the taste out his mouth. Classic stuff.

I always wondered whether McGoohan's strict Catholicism, which led him to refrain from physical love scenes, also led him to fine common cause with rogue Catholic loon Mel Gibson, who gave him his last great role as Edward Longshanks.

But perhaps I tread too close to defaming the memory of an actor whose work I admire greatly. De mortuis nil nisi bonum.

Oh no! I love Patrick McGoohan! Oh no! I'm going to go home and watch all the Prisoner episodes at once. Then all the Columbos he was in.

Alas poor No. 6 I knew him not so well.

McGoohan was the only actor to play 4 different murderers on Columbo.

Patrick McNee played on The Avengers.

I always used to pull for Number 2, but then I always used to pull for Tom, Wile E. Coyote, and Sylvester. I guess I like lost causes.

I always got Patrick McGoohan (The Prisoner) confused with Patrick Macnee (The Avengers).

    They were different people, right?

@MisterHippity: They were. Peter MacNicol and Kristy McNichol, however, are the same person. William Hurt and William Heard, different people. Dermot Mulroney and Dylan McDermott, same.

Hollywood is a very confusing place.

That's too bad. He was great in "The Prisoner" (and wrote several episodes, including the incredibly cool but incomprehensible series finale).

And in addition to everything else, he was a perfect villain on several "Columbo" episodes.
