Evolution is my line in the sand; I am super tolerant of all kinds of religious crap but if you don't believe in evolution I have no use for you. Done. Be gone.
Belonsky, the movie is called Creation. While On the Origin of Species is an excellent read, it hasn't been up for an award in Toronto any time recently.
Sorry, but I don't really buy the idea that creationists are blocking this movie from distribution in the U.S. For one thing, the markets to which Creation would be aimed toward (urban, college-educated) are pretty clearly THE EXACT OPPOSITE of those markets where the the film would be poorly received (amongst troglodytes).
From what I've heard, Creation is, plain and simple, a boring movie.
It seems to me like its producers are just manufacturing the controversy (rather adroitly, but still) in order to raise its profile enough to secure a U.S. distributor. As is, the whole situation is pretty stupid.
@Plawf: It does indeed seem odd that U.S. distributors would capitulate to the Christianistas on this. I agree this is more likely an attempt to create "buzz."
Either way, though, Americans are still getting more retarded by the minute.
@Plawf: Sounds about right. On the other hand, I have a hard time believing that a "really good" movie about evolution and natural selection would be well received in a society with as much of an anti-intellectual lean as ours (Planet Earth and March of the Penguins, notwithstanding).
@Plawf: I agree that this smells of "buzz", but I also could see that in the current political climate, the big movie houses might be scared to go near it and some of this could be an effort to promote risk.
@Plawf: Yeah, this seemed a bit fishy to me when I first read it. As much as I want to champion any struggle against ignorance, I just can't believe that no smaller distributors are willing to pick this film up for a limited release in major cities, which happens with arthouse films all the time. If I were a betting woman, I'd bet that the producers are trying to shame a major distributor into picking it up for a wide release, for reasons that may have as much to do with mammon as with principle. Or they're just trying to get as much publicity as they can.
@hilikusopus: Oh, I fully believe they couldn't get a major studio to release it, I just doubt like hell that every single U.S. distributor turned it down. In fact, I flat out don't believe it.

I believe in evolution, and I like Paul Bettany, but I have an irrational hatred of Jennifer Connelly that knows no bounds. I'm having a hard time getting outraged.
I kind of want to move to Brooklyn but my parents (who grew up there) are insisting I move back to Manhattan. I write "back" because that's where I was born. Since I'm young and still sort of dependent on them, they get a say but how about my say?! I'll be paying for almost all of it so I want to pay less by living in Brooklyn but they say I'll pay a ton to commute every day and such. What are everyone's thoughts on Williamsburg?!
@Renata Halpern: Industrial, but young. Over-priced, and a lot of apt's are not in very good shape. All in all, pass. Fort Green is hot, Greenpoint gives a lot of sq. ft. for your buck, Prospect Heights has the same brownstone charm as Park Slope but slightly cheaper. Kensington and off of Ocean Ave, even larger spaces, but you're getting far out there on the train. Basically, the farther away from Manhattan, the cheaper it gets.
I say go for it. When you see how much further your dollar goes, and the kind of space you can get, you'll be hooked. Not to mention it's beauty and char, which it has a lot of. The coolest people live in Brooklyn (ahem, self-servingly raises hand).
Oh, and for the die hard Manhattanites on here, you're so right: the B&T crowd IS horrible. It's such an ordeal to sit on a train. Please, stay where you are!!
I'm sure the abundance of converted barns and stables in the West Village is just making her nervous - I'm sure Matthew would hate for her to startle and bolt.
Most of the people I know fled park slope ten years ago, when rent hikes pushed out entry-level publishing industry single people. I can't imagine who lives there now.
@a boy and his dog: well the ppl i know there are gawker writers and a chick who works at trader joe's so it is definitely a nightmare of million dollar rents.
@mathnet: I may be beating a dead horse by mentioning the rumors of their not so stable relationship and Matthew horsing around with younger men and women but I am willing to bet they will be moving their herd back to Manhattan before too long
@blix: They were trying to stall the move, as they bridle at the idea of leaving Manhattan, but there's no choice now that they have such a foal house.
I'm just glad to see that Brooklyn won the derby. It was neck and neck for a while, but the longshots faded and the odds-on favorite pulled away from the competition.
@DeerDog: This isn't exactly above-the-foal news. You don't need a Gallop poll to realize that they weren't meant for Mane Street USA. Hopefully the paparrazi won't be a few lengths behind them when they move, and they can finally know the peace of a photo finish.
