@Owen Thomas: Perez is not a gay media mogul. He is an equal opportunity homunculus. He's a cross between Harvey Levin and a 13-year-old girl playing Dream Date. An ugly one at that.
It's true that gay portals are dead. I stopped checking PlanetOut, Gay.com et al years ago. But the TV/film arm of Here is just getting started; they are worth the $6 a month added onto my cable bill because, unlike Logo, there are no commercials and the content is shown uncut. Also, Shelter was a decent entrance into film distribution.
Hopefully our li'l gay Rupe won't try to conquer the web too quickly. There really can't be much left to PlanetOut in the way of assets other than their user databases, can there?
I don't need a new portal, gay or otherwise. My browser is set to open to a blank tab.
The notion of a gay Web portal might have made sense in the mid-'90s, but the idea seems terribly dated in 2009. Perhaps, it might be suitable for the gay neophyte after his first step out of the closet. But you quickly move on.
Glad to see someone is reporting on this. The only gay sites that make money are the hookup sites (see Manhunt.net or Adam4adam.com as examples). The content on most gay sites, like Gay.com, is about on par with a typical teen rag. As a professional gay male, I'm embarrassed by the people who read crap just 'cause it's gay; although, with this announcement, there clearly are less than was previously thought.
