@bryanthelion: Oh congress got involved and passed a law that would spread racketeering charges around to anyone involved with throwing warehouse parties should drugs be found at the party. (Including DJs, Warhouse owners, party promoters, people running the door. Anyone but attendees practically)

@Baroness: I know you're being humorous regarding the poor lady that lives upstairs...but I truly have no sympathy for these people. It's beyond me why people move downtown (or even to NY), ultimately complaining about the noise or people or whatever. It's a city with 8 million living tenants, free (or...should I say..they should be free) to walk around all night, smoking cigarettes, making music, or socializing on a street corner.

I'm sick of people trying to recreate their surroundings, instead of simply adapting or moving the fuck on. And I'm a semi-old.

Move to Larchmont, where you can light a tiki-torch, pour a glass of wine, and watch Squeaky the squirrel saunter by.

When I visited Detroit that fateful night, they'd (the promoters, or gutter punks, or drug dealers (pick one)) duct taped black plastic bags (cut and spread like sheets) against the walls, to trap the heat. Supposedly, being malnourished, parched, and confined within a space burning at 105 degrees gets the most bang for your buck, re: drugs.

Having lived around the corner from Beatrice in its prime, I can say you are mistaken about powerful and wealthy neighbors wanting them gone. The blocks around the basement rec room are full of Jane Jacobs types who live in rent-controlled apartments and just want to live their previously normal, quiet lives; the ones they led before the whole world or at least New Jersey decided Meat Packing and by extension the W. Village was hot. There are many more of them then there are Graydon Carters.

To be fair these people mostly tolerated Beatrice, because they were home in bed by the time the trashy girls attracted to it were roaming the hood asking where 12th Street is. But the city and the cops are not dumb; when Page Six, Gurley and you guys are all writing about coke and e in the bathrooms, they pay attention. It's one thing if it's going on in every club in Chelsea or B'burg, it's another when it makes the papers. Beatrice f'd up in a town where second chances are hard to come by.

@Nic Fit: It was a step in the right direction, especially moving towards standards based on what you can hear instead of what you can measure with a machine that no one is walking around with. That said, enforcement is still very difficult, noise in the city is ubiquitous (and often transitory), and the nightlife lobby is nearly as strong as the people who got no sleep are angry.
