I'm a long time Madonna fan, so I'm happy that she's still working, and that she looks a bit more robust, and not so, well, stringy, but the Lady GaGa-ness of it was a little much, the glasses, the techno porn etc. However, none of this changes the fact that I would be mortified if my mother gyrated on my soccer coach, flung her woman-meats in hyper speed, or sounded mostly like a hoarse, mating, sea-lion. Just sayin.
Love you, M'Donna, but I'd enjoy watching you guest judge on So You Think You Can Dance.
I'd say Madonna is doing pretty well to still be producing music and videos of this caliber a full quarter of a century into her career!
Somehow I doubt we'll be seeing Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Britney and the rest continuing to do this that far into their own careers should they get that far.
I think the song and video are great and it's already selling truckloads around the planet. That is no small thing.
Haven’t I seen you somewhere before?/You look familiar/You wanna dance?/Yeah …/I guess I just don’t recognize you with your clothes on…
Um, Mrs. Ciccone? I’m Timmy - Lourdes’ lab partner from school, remember? I just came over to see if she wanted to work on our science homework together. But I guess she isn’t here, so, um … I’ll just be going now …
@wrongneighborhood: Mine, too. I listened to a random mix of her stuff while driving through the LA smoke on Sunday, and I'm surpirsed how well a lot of it holds up.
@jimstoic: I respectfully disagree. The paradox is that Madonna is one of the biggest names ever but she doesn't really have any long lasting timeless hits (like a virgin maybe). Its all show and no substance.
@Big Poppa: Well, it depends on how you define "long lasting timeless hit." Madonna has always been about what goes on around the music rather than the music itself. Musically, "Vogue" (e.g.) is practically nothing, but for 20 years now the look and feel of the video has permeated the culture.
I won't say she did it single-handedly or in any sort of conscious way, but Madonna has redefined pop music to mean something much broader than tunes and hooks and beats. By that standard, she has created as many "hits" as any musical act in the past quarter century.
@BookishLookish: We're getting into an argument that this is art?
It's a music video, an "art" medium that sadly died a long time ago by the hands of Viacom. The video is an advertisement for what she's trying to sell: an upcoming album and concert tickets.
I think you're looking for substance in the wrong place.
I don't understand why Gawker insists on referring to Luz as her "boyfriend". He is an image accessory and a ladder-climbing hanger-on - nothing more, nothing less. You don't need to follow her very closely (or have insider info, which exists) to realize that.
Wow, that video was incredibly unsexy and tedious. By the time you are fifty, you shouldn't have to be gyrating in your videos anymore. Darling, you've ARRIVED, give it a rest.
I want to see a video of Madonna eating a slice of cake to her song. That would be more interesting than this rehashed nonsense.
(Nice boots though, and very directional for the fall.)
@BookishLookish: I don't think that women over 50 should be prohibited from gyrating. There's nothing wrong with continuing to be sexy. Check out the video of 50-ish Nina Hagen with 70-ish Dieter Hallervorden.
@Spy from the Land of Rainpeople: I invented gyrating and I am as old as the hills. But if you're going to do it, it should have some soul in it, some feeling. Her shit is as cold as a statue. Madonna is more an athlete than anything at this point. Her sport is making money.
