Thanks for this -- great story!
Best part: she didn't want to be in the industry; she just loved his movies and wanted to know him. I can't imagine a kid today doing this for anything other than course credit or a foot in the door...
@pretzelgreg: Yeah, that part was interesting.... big reason behind his decision to give it all up was that "they" (Hollywood) had "killed" his friend, John Candy, by greedily working him too hard.
There's no question Hollywood is a greedy fucking machine that has no emotion, takes great talent and eventually churns them into slop without concern for their wellbeing, but in John Candy's case, not being very physically fit and with heart disease being in his family, I wonder how much blame you can really put on Hollywood itself.
That was pretty effing awesome. Makes me wish I'd had the balls to do something like that as a kid, or even now. What a great look into the man behind the movies.
Oh my God. I can't believe how wonderful this is- what a great, kind man he was reaching out to a real human being and making a difference in her life. This story would make a fantastic movie, but only if John Hughes wrote and directed it.
