You hit it on the head about the walking thing. I'd actually go so far as to argue that it's only in New York where it doesn't even occur to you not to walk miles from place to place (which I do) and in any other town should I need to two blocks, I promptly jump in the car and go two blocks.
Sigh.
@manchops: I was in San Jose, at a hotel. I needed to go to a convenience store for something, and I asked the desk clerk where one was. He took out a photocopied map of the general vicinity and, with a highlighter, plotted out the way. I was confused. It was a circuitous auto route (here's a map so you can see yourself) but the convenience store was literally -- I'm not embellishing this at all -- merely two small parking lots away (one of the lots was for Creative Labs, if you're interested). He said that no one ever thought to walk there because of the expressway (an easily crossable six-lane highway with traffic lights). I'm not joking, I repeat, this is not some fish-out-of-water story. What is wrong with these people?
This is hilarious. HILARIOUS! It makes my damn day. By the way, I worked down the street from what's now their building for years, and parking at the Century City Mall for meetings at any number of different CCity offices is a time-honored tradition. The idea of CAA doing this to its clients is particularly sweet, though.
@MissNormaDesmond: yes but probably not ALL clients and visitors.
the A-Lists, studio head types etc probably still get their free valet.
it's the lesser folks that has to pay up themselves.
and as for the PA comment someone made, I doubt they are valet'd. they probably put on the flasher and run into a reception and are out in 60 seconds. having been to the building there's a huge driveway,there might even be space created just for those folks (although there's not much left to deliver since so much is email anyway)
@ArleenCabango: A lot of office buildings in C City have a side lot for delivery parking; it would be surprising if this one didn't. I gleefully left The Industry before construction was completed on that building (I was around just long enough to have it regularly mess up my commute for months), so I've never been in it, but I'm mildly curious about it, since I spent a fair amount of time contemplating it in its unfinished state.
I realize that this may come across as harping, but...
Google has invested in Wojcicki's company at the behest of a founder. Google is not subject to the marriage contract and because 23andMe is still in the startup phase, it hasn't produced any value for Google's shareholders. Any future investments would be subject to the whim of Sergey;
Expect us to add benefits rather than pare them down over time. We believe it is easy to be penny wise and pound foolish with respect to benefits that can save employees considerable time and improve their health and productivity.
doesn't every company started by some fruit-booted shitass in a garage that makes it big go through the same tired cycle of plucky-futurist-luxuriating in cash-cutthroat-obsolete- bankrupt? isn't that observation also cliched? where am i? why don't i have any pants? can i borrow change for the bus?
To think they could have avoided the bad press by instead trumpeting their commitment to Green by transitioning these comp'd subs to the online version, which has a marginal cost of 0.
@britneyspearstears: You get a protective wrapper? I haven't seen a wrapper since the 80's. I just get the magazine with the mailing label stuck on the cover. I want protection!
