I can get my local Comcast sports channel, and Comcast-owned Versus, on my Verizon system.

Why would Comcast pull NBC content from DirecTV? They would have to believe that pulling the content would initiate a massive consumer withdrawal from satellite TV, otherwise it would just be a lost revenue stream.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out in the net-neutrality debate, what with Comcast now in a position to bottleneck its competitors' online content...

This article at THR says Baldwin isn't planning on retiring until 2012. Clearly, this is what the Mayans were counting down to.

I read the book a few years back and was fairly disappointed. I felt that it could have been something much better. I was surprised after hearing such rave reviews.

@pooks: I really detested the book as well. I expected MUCH more from a book receiving such accolades. I'd like to see a better execution of the premise by a writer who cares about her reader after chapter, say 5 or 6?

@pooks: What really ruined it for me were the incredibly one-dimensional characters, and the just general treacly nature. It's interesting that at the same time I was reading a YA novel called Elsewhere with a somewhat similar premise, and I found that to be much more sophisticated and moving than Lovely Bones.

@Erda: I read both of these two, and while I hated the pretentious and insulting Lovely Bones, Elsewhere was actually moving and imaginative.

@Morne: Agreed. I mean, a lot of high schools teach The Great Gatsby and 1984 and no one would ever say those are "YA books." A lot of adult novels can easily be read by high schoolers, especially advanced ones.

@eatsshootsleaves: Yeah, it's amazing how imaginative and original some of the YA novels are, which is why as a college student I still occasionally read some of them. It just sucks that the ones that get the most popular - Twilight, for example - tend to be the worst, and I hope publishers don't take a cue from that drivel and stop publishing good YA novels.

I saw Lovely Bones . It's horrible. An afterschool special meets a Skittles commercial. The girl from Atonement is good. But Mark Wahlberg is awful....in a really bad wig. Susan Sarandon is there for some reason too.

I just had a thought--what if...no, life could not be this kind, but if there is a Santa Claus: I really, really, really want Kathryn Bigelow (the former Mrs. James Cameron) to be nominated for Best Director for The Hurt Locker while Avatar is simpering in its last days of theatrical release before being lost to DVD obscurity.

I've been a good girl! I deserve this! Bigelow deserves it even more!

@oudemia: Her IMDb bio says she was married to Cameron for a short time in the late 80s/early 90s. I really think she has him beat as a director comin' and a goin'.

@oudemia: "If there's specific resistance to women making movies, I just choose to ignore that as an obstacle for two reasons: I can't change my gender, and I refuse to stop making movies. It's irrelevant who or what directed a movie, the important thing is that you either respond to it or you don't. There should be more women directing; I think there's just not the awareness that it's really possible. It is." ~~Kathryn Bigelow

Because if that's what you're saying it is malfeasance of a level that may well require a class-action lawsuit on behalf of people like me who thrive on bad porn titles derived from conventional cinema.
