More proof that in some respects, the UK is light years ahead of the US, where "gay" and "literary" have tended to cancel each other out for the past ____ decades. I'll be curious to see if the book contains any literal cocksucking/assfucking. And hey, forget Zadie Smith, I think Alan Hollinghurst is single (?) -- now that would be a literary power-couple.

What a yawner of a Top Ten. Combined, those 10 books won't sell 100,000 in hardcover. Where is Nelson DeMille, or Michael Connelly, or Tom Friedman, or Malcolm Gladwell, some other perennial mega-seller? Those beloved authors don't make the Top Ten because they sell warehouses full of books without amazon's annual weak (and ineffective) attempt to prop up unknown authors.

I grew up in a "literary household." My mother is the only one I know who made it all the way through "Finnegan's Wake." It took me a long time to appreciate that upbringing.

Ooooh, I haven't read The Likeness yet, but I am dying to after reading In the Woods. And while I love Det. Maddox, I can only hope there will be another book in the future, that continues Det. Ryan's story.

@Meg: I just finished The Likeness. I recommend it (like that carries any weight), but I don't want to say anything that affects your experience of it. There are hints that she (the author) isn't finished with Det. Ryan yet. I hope she does explain what happened to him at some point.

I was all set to load up the .50-cal Repeating Snark Cannon and discharge it at this fantastical phrase "literary households"...but I'm still feeling too much residual glow from the Obama victory to pull the trigger.

Still, we are paying attention out here. You can't expect to slip howlers like that past us just because it's the weekend.

@skahammer: I dated this guy once who owned 3 books. All of them about golf. So, compared to that we here are very literate.

BTW, I missed the Ron Rash book completely. Anyone know anything about that?

Maybe its the size of the field the judges have to choose from (considering its basically the entire English speaking world other than the U.S.), but the Man Booker short-list seems to consistently turn up over-looked gems far more regularly than any of the similar U.S. based awards.
