It's exceedingly depressing that there are three cases of this in the last year or two. Just speaks to how many more are not found. Sick sick sick.

Oh, the Sun, your speculative ways make the NY Post look like the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The one bonus to be had from that article is this lil nugget, though:

Jaycee's real father Kenneth Slayton has issued a DEATH threat to Garrido.

The 64-year-old Vietnam veteran, who fathered Jaycee after a fling with her mum Terry Probyn, said: "What she went through is horrible. I'd love to get my hands on Garrido and kill him. I hope he rots in jail."

    sweet.

More disturbing than the occasional demand for payment, are the sadly not infrequent telephone calls I get from some polite person -- a murder victim's mother, someone abused by the justice system -- who wants to know how much it will cost to get a story in the paper.

That's how it works, isn't it? And they ask without any outrage, just a calm acceptance that just like the mayor, the police chief, and the local billionaire, they can get a news story, too -- if they just pay for it.

Disclosure: one time, I accepted a tamale.

Professional paddywagon chaser John Walsh has inserted himself into the California monster kidnapping case, saying the predictable things on Larry King. I suppose that Gloria Allred isn't far behind.I'm sorry that his little boy is gone and has been for years, but at some point the public caring starts to resemble a career. No doubt he's doing some good, but really ...For that matter, how much of a career did Jenny McCarthy have before she began scaring people with flat-out falsehoods about autism? And unlike Walsh, she's doing nothing but harm.

And who would have heard of Jerry Lewis in 50 years were it not for muscular dystrophy?Don't mean to be mean, but at some point the putative altruism becomes more like milking a cash cow.

HE'S sitting there suffering?! He as much admitted he wrote his son off years ago as crazy and hasn't had any contact with him. Sure charge everyone a butt load of money but put it into an account for Jaycee.

I sometimes read the Bad Date Sheet that's prepared for the local prostitutes. It's ALWAYS an older-model white van with rust.

BBC News has photos of the now-infamous backyard.

But Jaycee worked with him and interacted with the public. That seems a little incongruent, no?

@♥♥♥: Incongruous with hiding her in a secret backyard. The backyard hideout makes me think he would want to keep her out of the public's sight, much as with that Fritzl dude in Austria, but what do I know.

wow... we used to have one of those.. when they were new .. in 19-fucking-78. It was the Dodge MaxiVan complete with orange carpet on the ceiling, 8-track playa, and a "wet bar" where you had to pump water with a little handle.. but I was 3.. and there were 5 people in our family, long before molestors got word this was THE party van...

@Lucky: I was going to chime in and say those vans are pretty much ubiquitous in any municipality named Antioch. I'm from Antioch, TN and you could spit out my front door and hit 3 serial killer specials like that clunker.

@RandomLunatic: The owners of those vans in Antioch, CA are usually just around the edges of town, like Garrido was. Areas I imagine are much more like the Antioch, TN that you describe than the rest of Antioch.

What is it with loonies and headphones? There's a man who lives in my neighborhood in Seattle who believes that demons control human actions through cell phones. He has signs all over his yard to this effect, and he sleeps outside. I assume he's harmless, but sometimes I wonder - for instance, he goes around posting fake "letters" from fake Seattle police officers attesting to his goodness and sanity.
