The Blackest Friday
So yes, today is Black Friday, the day when big stores roll out big, one-day-only bargains in the hopes of setting a high sales bar for the all-important Holiday Season (Christmas! And, to a much lesser extent, Chanukkah!) Good savings are especially urgent this year, with the economy in the crapper and everyone needing to buy things for as cheap as possible (just short of not buying it at all. That would be ludicrous!) Every year, people line up super, super early in the morning. And in some cases, store employees get trampled to death when the doors open and crazed shoppers try to push their way in. (Un)Fortunately there is no photo documentation of that particular melee, but Getty managed to snap some shots at Macy's in New York City and at a Best Buy electronics store in Los Angeles this morning and the madness is palpable. Click after the jump for a gallery. More » -

The Raging California Wildfires
The Prop 8 fight isn't the only battle raging in California right now. As we complain about the cold here in New York, huge wildfires are quickly gobbling up large swaths of Southern California. Some 30,000 people have fled their homes, and a reported 1,000 houses have been destroyed. It's pretty apocalyptic looking. As one Flickr member noted, there are scenes of scorched earth and sky that remind us of Cormac McCarthy's end of the world novel The Road. We've put together a gallery of some of our favorite images from Flickr after the jump. Harrowing stuff. -

Send us shots of your own and we'll add them to the galleries, or feel free to post in the comments. In the meantime, try not to get too drunk or start throwing anything or pushing anyone. New Rose Kennedy Schlossberg Photos Tell Shocking Tale Of Smoking, Drinking, Famous College Student
Two whole years have hurried their way by since last we saw "scandalous" images of Rose Kennedy Schlossberg, daughter of Caroline Kennedy and granddaughter of John Fitzgerald. Back in 2006, our former sister site Wonkette posted wine 'n hookah partaking photos of the then-18, Obama-supporting Harvard student (hello, past Pareene!) Now, in the still of the afternoon, someone has sent us more photos, from sources unknown! In which the heiress to the great mantle of the American Democratic Party gets jiggy in various poses! Some are dated from two years ago, others are not dated at all. Cobble together your own timeline, as we've gone against Luke Russert's wishes and posted a gallery after the jump. -

The Best Of Sad Floor Traders
No doubt these are sad times. The economy is crashing and burning in a terrific, America-changing (oh and probably the rest of the world too) flameout. No image—not a hobo running for a boxcar, not a Dorothea Lange migrant mother pensively contemplating the fate of all things—captures the ruinous emotions of the past several weeks than sad stock market floor traders. Yes those poor suited men and women who clutch their faces in utter shock and disbelief, flashes of years spent (and maybe wasted) trudging through business school running through their minds as the numbers plunge and plunge. We've a chief compiler of these images in Sad Guys On Trading Floors, a Tumblr blog of woe and despair. After the jump we've put together a gallery of our favorite devastating photos. Poor guys. Media Vultures Feast On Lehman Brothers
No story about a bankrupt company is complete without the requisite "sad sack carries own crap out of office in boxes" shot, so of course every media outlet in the world was rolling tape or snapping pictures outside Lehman Brothers headquarters in New York Monday. TV reporters were doing their standups with the building in the background, so the average Joe watching at home would be able to say to his wife, "so that's where my securitized subprime mortgage is bundled with commercial-mortgage-backed securities into a mark-to-model collateralized debt obligation!" Over-extrapolating from the financial fortunes of others is precisely what got us into this mess in the first place but, but on the other hand you can't expect people not to stare at pictures of anyone potentially in the process of becoming a hobo. Watch the media watch the (maybe) new poors in the gallery after the jump. More » -

Democratic Convention A Battle Of Crazy Hats
Forget the speeches and the platform, the delegate votes and the big Barack Obama speech tonight. Political conventions are nothing if not stages on which the craziest campaign volunteers — both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have them! — can strut around in their wildest costumes. No one's been spotted with a sticker on their forehead yet, even though that's a trademark move of Clinton's crazier supporters, or wearing an Abercrombie shirt, even though that's the preferred apparel of Barack Obama's emptiest young volunteers. But the hoi polloi are coming to the big stadium event tonight, so anything is still possible. So far the DNC has seen hats and other attire in flavors vaguely gay, cowboyish, flag-desecrating, Mexican and just plain insane. There's a photo gallery after the jump, culled (mostly) by our own Richard Blakeley from the sea of convention footage. More » -

Bush Looking Drunk At The Olympics
No one's saying teetotaling President Bush would actually try and sneak some shots of alcohol while enjoying himself at the Beijing Olympics as his apocalyptically bad presidency recedes into history. That's the sort of thing you'd read in, say, the National Enquirer, which as everyone knows is full of trashy tabloid lies. Besides, the president doesn't have to consume actual alcohol to act like a bumbling fraternity president. Still, it's worth noting that Bush has been doing a funny/terrifying impersonation of a drunk president for all the press photographers at the Olympics. He's even got the red face thing down! After the jump, enjoy a photo gallery of the president looking his most wasted, from that beach volleyball embarrassment to daughter Barbara looking embarrassed next to Bush at a swimming match, plus some of the other ones Wonkette found on Four Winds 10 last night and some other ones thrown in for fun. The 2008 Montauk Monster Yearbook
What the hell happened last week? Yes some guy went insane on a Canadian Greyhound bus, but more importantly a monster attacked our eastern shores. Yes some sort of bloated hell best carcass washed up in Montauk recently and we provided expert cryptozoology coverage from here in our fortified bunker. We've received countless emails positing theories and declaring conclusions. It's a dog, it's a raccoon, it is actually Lizzie Grubman, it's some sort of energy bar called a Nutria, etc. Some of those emails came with pictures, whether they were side-by-side comparisons or Photoshop mashups. So we thought we'd provide a definitive Montauk Monster photo gallery for you which you can look at, if you dare, after the jump. If you have more pictures, send them along. This X-File remains open...

Mary-Kate Olsen Party Candids
Once again, some noble crusader has invaded Photobucket and dug up some scurrilous photos of young celebrities at play. In today's batch, one of the Olsen twins (we suspect Mary-Kate) is partying with some friends, most of whom are dressed in flannel, including famous rich person's daughter Nicole Richie and her man friend, rocker Joel Madden. The kids are pictured in some sort of wood-paneled mansion, playing with a piƱata and smoking cigarettes. It's unclear when these were taken or whose birthday (it's a birthday, right?) they were celebrating, but Nicole Richie seems to be making a point of showing that she's not drinking in one of the photos. So perhaps it was while she was pregnant. Do your own sleuthing around the big brown mansion in a photo gallery, after the jump.

Gossip Girl Stars Are Just Like Us
Ohhh dear. Some nefarious genius has stumbled upon the Photobucket page of Ed Westwick, also known as Charles "Chuckles" Bass from the Ken Burns documentary series Gossip Girl (kidding, it's just a silly soap about rich Manhattan teens). Or is it the work of Chace "Nate" Crawford, another actor on the show? Or of some anonymous, obsessive third party? There are lots of personal photos of Ed, Chace, and various friends posing drunkenly and cockily, as the young ones are wont to do. Look, there are Chace and Ed looking sexy and intimate, as they should always look! And there's Ed in bed with an anonymous lady friend! And there, of course, they all are, clearly drunk as monks. Though they may play Upper East Side rich brats on TV, they are in fact just like us. Drunken idiots who pose for silly photos. We've selected the best and put them in a handy photo album for you. Won't you help us caption them?

The Great Burbank Fire Of 2007: The Photo Gallery
Sure, we all know what wildfires look like by now, but it's rare for one to appear that affords us such a tantalizingly accurate vision of Hollywood's much-anticipated End of Days, give or take a quartet of Apocalyptic horsemen galloping through the streets to harvest what's left of the souls of those who toil in the industry. And so we've quickly thrown together this photo gallery of the Great Burbank Fire of 2007 for your enjoyment, containing both the images from our earlier posts about today's spectacular, sky-darkening conflagration and some new ones. Enjoy, and happy Friday. More » -
