    That's sort of the type of headline I'd expect to see on Jezebel to stir up the page views. My dad was a Sgt. Major and spent the majority of the past five years in Iraq, and he'll be the first one to tell you that when the President visits, your commanders tell you to go. It's not "the pres is here, who wants to go see him?' EVERYONE goes. They have to. So the racial makeup of the crowd is only representative of the racial makeup of the soldiers who are stationed at that FOP, and has nothing to do with the color of the President. It's not like Obama showed up and therefore more black soldiers decided to go hear them speak. They were all required to be there, just like they were all required to be there when Bush was pres.

    I went to two major US Army forts and saw way more minorities than anything else. Yes, minority youths are targeted from poor places but it's also partially their choice because I've heard of kids contemplating the military or jail. Also, a retired general told me that many young black men turn to the structure of the army to fill the void left from non-existent fathers and to find some sense of responsibility.


    After visiting the bases I felt like a pathetic selfish baby because here were all these (younger) kids risking their lives for my freedom. It was an eye opener.

    @Spirit Fingers: Fine. I just wish the military would stop targeting schools with large percentages of minorities. I don't see them going to Beverly Hills High School trying to recruit those students. They do it to those schools specifically because they assume that those students aren't worth shit.

    @Gael: And you make a valid point. It is a systemic strategy that the military employs, but it's also true that many of the non-minority soldiers are from lower income/working class families as well, and they are targeted for the same reason. The numbers aren't proportionate, but classism exists here as well.

    @Gael: Actually, I think that the reason low-income schools are better targets for recruiters is that poor people have more to gain from military service than do rich people. Military pay (at the entry pay grades)is more comparable to that which poor and lower-middle-class can aspire to without college, and benefits such as the GI Bill, VA loans etc. are more attractive to those populations. Recruiters go where they are more likely to get recruits, not where they think the recruits that they get will be expendable trash.
