Well, I know this opinion will not be a popular one, but believe it or not, David Spade is MUCH funnier when he does stand-up. I didn't believe it until I saw for myself at a corporate event in Vegas some years back. Yeah, I know, corporate event. Anyway...
The Farley family has been flogging this dead horse for a while. Anyone else remember the radio commercials where the family explains that Chris' death was due to addiction and "wasn't his fault." Also, the book that's basically a total spin control on the way he's been portrayed. His brothers are both fairly successful commercial actors, but they still sit at the table Funny Falling Fat Guy built. #davidspade
The ad doesn't work. It's gauche. Farley's death still stings and Tommy Boy was his finest hour. Maybe a documentary on him is in order. Things like this don't keep his memory alive, they just remind his fans that he's dead. #davidspade
I know his big idol was John Belushi, but, sorry... you need to be a lot more than a sloppy-fat loudmouth to be anywhere near as funny as John Belushi. Farley had that one good bit about the motivational speaker who lives in a van down by the river, but that was pretty much beat after about the second or third go-round.
As far as David Spade being funny, well... let's just say I get more laughs from the idea of having red-hot steel spikes being driven into my eyeballs.
Call me a geezer, but the last time SNL was anything approaching funny was with the 1975-81 cast. Everything else was just a "franchise". #davidspade
@flugennock: Blasphemy. Farley blows away most of the overrated original cast. Back in the seventies, they could get some yucks simply by referencing pot. Farley was a goddamn comedic genius, SNL's finest performer. And Matt Foley, motivational speaker, was its finest character. #davidspade
@rabbitangstrom: On a semi-related note, the powers that be at Gawker who decided to implement the 'load more posts' button can also gargle my balls. Why the fuck do I have to hit the button three times and scroll down a dozen screens before new posts actually show up? #davidspade
@Phyllis Nefler: I 'heart' you Phyllis because you have allayed my fear that nobody ever sees me in the gray-scaled world of Gawker-commenter purgatory. #davidspade
To be fair it's likely that Spade did the commercial in order to help out the Farley family. I'm guessing they could use the money much more than David. #davidspade
If Mr. Spade had really wanted to pay homage to his dead friend, don't you think there might have been a format that allowed him to do so a little more reverently/sincerely/deeply? Call me old school here but since when does a 30-second spot stand in as an acceptable substitute for a lifetime retrospective? #davidspade
@TheSometimesWhy: But Chris Farley loved making people laugh. If that ad gets people to crack up, Farley probably would have been pleased with it. He also loved David Spade, so if it puts some money in Spade's pocket, Farley may have been all the happier to help out his friend. #davidspade
@RussianTaco: With all due respect, I think there were greater forces at work than Farley's love of making people laugh, and some of those forces were pretty dark.
I was an actor back in the 80s when Farley was just getting his start, and do you want to know the saddest thing about his career? It started and ended the time when Del Close, a once-excellent improviser-turned-improv-guru/teacher/name-dropper pulled Farley aside and told him that the last time he had seen anyone with Chris's talent was John Belushi. From that point on, you could see Farley living up to/killing himself to be just like Belushi. No one ever told him he didn't have to die like Belushi to be able to perform like him. And that is tragic #davidspade
@If_I_Had_a_Poodle: I don't understand why people are getting upset with Spade. He also mentions they went to Farley's family as well. And if pimping out the dead is shocking to anyone I have wonder if you've ever heard of Hollywood before. #davidspade
I think it just feels too soon, even though he died nearly twelve years ago. If it were a Belushi movie, we probably wouldn't balk. We'd say, "Aww, remember how great Belushi was?" And it would be true. So after I got over the initial shock of seeing Farley (not on TNT, TBS, or Comedy Central, btw) it made me want to see Tommy Boy since it's been a while since I last saw it. And I think that's kinda the point, no? #davidspade

Arch your back a little, David.
Smile for me, David.
Come on, David. Smile, smile.
Smile for me.
Now take your thumb and put it in your mouth
Like a little schoolgirl. #davidspade
