Y'know, all this talk of win vs Mac...it's all the same damn thing nowadays. The Mac had more of an edge in the days of Motorola and IBM procs. Now they're just PC's running a hardware-picky operating system.

We should just all run Ubuntu. No, wait, Debian...er, make that CentOS...no.......

All I know is my anti-mac 69 year old father used to call me 4 times a week with problems using his Dell, and once I gave him my p;d mac he's called me twice in 5 years. Once because the picture of my nephew he had open accidentally closed, the other time because of a spinning "pink, yellow, blue, green..." ball from using Facebook.

@DannyOcean: You sniffing glue or something? It's taken 2 days of fiddling for the IT people in my office to get the new PC "working," and now i don't have internet access. Figuring this would happen, i brought my iBook from home, plugged the ethernet cable into the side, and here i am, shamelessly ignoring work because i shouldn't have to bring equipment from home just to get my job done and because i'm passive aggressive.

This article makes me want a PC for my next computer. Photoshop is awesome and far superior to iPhoto's limited capibilities, and it's only $140? The other apps seem useless: iTunes is free, I don't need video software, it sounds like multimedia software is already covered under other categories, and there's better (and freer) anti-virus stuff out there. Are you sure they're not trying to sell PCs here?

The dumb thing is that this is the wrong comparison to make. Macs don't ship with any useful software that you couldn't download for free for a PC - in fact one of the main pluses in my recent purchase of an iMac was that it didn't come stuffed with previewware and corporate spyware that I had to wipe, as I did when I bought a Vaio last fall. The difference is that Macs tend to use better components than cheap PCs, and when you add in equivalent-quality hardware to those PCs, you end up at about the same price as you would with a Mac.

Of course, most people don't need all the high-quality bits in Macs, which is why it's nice having the option of buying cheap-ass PCs (like my own $499 Sony). But there's a difference between giving up the bottom end of the market and charging a 100% premium for your brand.

@Astigmatism: The quality of hardware is actually a fairly good point, but I have to fire back with the fact that Macs have to be bought complete, while a PC can be purchased piece by piece. I'm one of those people that never buy a complete system unless it's a laptop (and then Apple doesn't make any Wacom-based tablet pcs, so they're not even an option), so the Mac isn't really an option because Apple doesn't sell components.

Wait, what??

Macs do not come with anti-virus, Photoshop, *or* a Geek squad visit. And wtf is "multimedia software"? That could mean anything. Windows Media Player certainly qualifies, and there's nothing the Mac comes with that's any better. (Assuming they're breaking out Garage Band into the "music software" category, which is one of the few legitimate things on this list.)

Talk about a reach.

@badasscat: I hate iPhoto with a burning hot passion. You can't even make a LOLcat with it without kludging through iMovie. And Photoshop Elements 7 isn't available for a Mac at any price. Win for PC.
