Eh, I still love the Simpsons. It hasn't been laugh out loud funny in years, but it's a part of my childhood. I rarely catch the new episodes but I always watch the repeats that air in syndication. It's still better than about 80% of all the shows on t.v. That isn't saying much but I still appreciate the fact that they are chugging along. #margesimpson
The Simpsons still has enough credit in my book to do at least a (non-consecutive) season's worth of stupid episodes, but now that the merchandising craze is over and the movie has been made, maybe it's time to quit. I do enjoy the fact that Europe loves the Simpsons and I would not enjoy all of the farewall hoopla that a Simpsons finale would gather, but though some may argue that Sesame Street and SNL have run their course, the Simpsons truly have, and I'd like to see them retire with some dignity. #margesimpson
@VioletViolet: They should only make 4 episodes a year or something. Let the writers work with more material. Cranking out 13 episodes a year has to be hell.
The world loves the Simpsons. I knew a guy from India who learned to speak American from watching the Simpsons. He learned English with 2 years of school and pirate satellite broadcasts. The kids wanted to be hip and cool and that meant understanding the American shows. The Simpsons does so much for democracy and promoting an American way of life that the U.S. should be broadcasting it 24/7 to turn hearts and minds our way. It would probably work. #margesimpson
@bens: I totally agree. In Spain they love the Simpsons, too. That's how they explained the word for "burp"--"eructo"--to me. "Like Homer Simpson. Blaaah." And I understood.
I won't be convinced that Time is at all serious about their brand of stupid unless they name Glenn Beck Man of the Year. Even "The Angry American" won't cut it. #media
Have you watched the CNN online newscast? It's two college kids doing the news from the bridge of the Enterprise but with most of the props missing. #media
@TheBusinessGuy: If there was no event that I was watching on one of their live channels, I've actually been known to leave the stationary shot of the White House or some other quiet thing open, rather than listen to the newbies blather. #media
@Magister: I know what you mean. I love Blitzer's idiotic tags to stories. For example, if Earth were blown up by the Martians, Blitzer would say on the outro, "The Earth has been blown up. Certainly a tragedy, and we will be following this." Jack Cafferty always looks at him as if he's a fly in Cafferty's soup. #media
@TheBusinessGuy:
What gets me is when he's "interviewing" a reporter or analyst to provide background and asks questions which he should be able to answer, if he's half as smart as his audience, but some producer's obviously telling him there's an interesting factoid somebody, somewhere may not have heard.
The anchors on cnn.com were much the same way, except unlike Blitzer, I never expected them to know.
@Magister: After watching Blitzer for five minutes, you really don't expect him to know much of anything. Actually, the only CNN headliners with real heft are Amanpour and Zakaria--especially Zakaria, whose Sunday show always feel like the ideal seminar at the Kennedy School. #media
Robert Downey Jr. might play him in the biopic? Or, as Hef would title it: Iron Man 3.
p.s. Foster, story ran A1 in the lesser-read Saturday paper. #hughhefner
It's sad, though. Hefner has gone from innovative threat to morality--and thus a hero to many--to toothless beloved joke in just over half a lifetime. #hughhefner
@BxgrlJeri: I think Playboy had a hand in influencing many Baby Boomers' attitudes toward sex -- which explains a lot.
Fun Wiki "fact": In 1970, Playboy became the first gentleman's magazine to be printed in braille. #hughhefner
They could never make up their minds about whether the pictorials would be porn or erotica. Christie Hefner should have fired their terrible stuck-in-the-80s photographer Stephen Wayda a long time ago. He and the art directors are partly responsible for the failure of Playboy. Somehow they managed to make pics of pretty naked women look cheesy, boring and even occasionally schmaltzy. The fiction was always weird and dull. Many of the articles had a smug and superior tone. The best part of Playboy was the interview. There is no interview anywhere like the Playboy interview. Brutally honest, funny, strange. Not even Fresh Air was so direct and smart. I'll miss those the most . #playboy
