@TubOfTaft: I notice things. You must have said something at some point that caused me to click the little heart. Either that, or I have a penchant for tubby tub-sitting bodies of which I was hitherto unaware. #race
Oh liberals! So you think protests aren't as effective as what you do (smarmy blog posts), but that shouldn't block out the real civil rights violations that are happening at these protests (St. Paul was a police state nightmare during the RNC).
The point isn't whether you agree with protesters (as many of you are happy to point out with 9/12ers) it's whether they're allowed to have a voice, or whether it should be shut down for not being popular with the authorities.
This liberal "common sense" is bullshit.
As is the "Lone Scout's" claim that these videos are a reaction to protest organizers' violence. C'mon, who is naive now?
Oh it's been asked of Mayor Luke. I'm sure the G20 coming here was the brainchild of Dan Onorato, who I believe is starting a campaign for Pennsylvania governor. I, for one, will not be voting for him.
My dad whose office was near yesterday's protests kept emailing me to tell me, "Ninjas are running down the street, taking their clothes off to get away from the police." Pretty sure seeing all that was the highlight of his month, hell, year.
Even if the writer of this article doesn't think the protests are meaningful or effective, I have to thank him for posting about them.
Thank you, John Cook, for at least reporting these events. The main reason that protest in this country has become so ineffective is not that it lacks vigor - look at these fucking kids! - but because our entire information apparatus refuses to acknowledge it.
Gawker ain't exactly the NBC Evening News, but its something, and I appreciate it. Thank you.
@Aidan_: If you're in Pittsburgh, the news stations are covering the protests 24/7 in real time and very much from the protesters point of view. There is very much not a lack of protest coverage here, if only bc the actual conference has a media blackout and nthere's nothing else to actually report on.
Cops weren't the only ones using sonic weapons. Brian Williams had a nice little setup last night overlooking the river but NBC Evening News didn't anticipate a protester with a very loud megaphone getting close enough to disrupt the audio. You'd think a big network could filter out unwanted background noise (just like international finance ministers) but by the end all Williams could do was joke about it.
@naugahydeinplainsight: I was pretty impressed with him though - the guy with the bullhorn didn't seem to phase him at all. He only acknowledged it at the end of the story at his signoff. I wouldn't have been able to complete a sentence if I were in his position.
@missing_piece: Yeah, it may have bothered folks at home more than it seemed to bother him (though I wonder what went on during the cutaways). And I liked the way he made light of it at the end. I was just amazed by NBC's technical failure.
Today should be pretty peaceful. The march organizers got their permit weeks ago. Yesterday's march was illegal and ridiculously poorly organized. I watched a few hundred people just stand in the middle of the street for no apparent reason, then they'd walk this way, then that way. I asked a friend who'd been following them for awhile if the point of it was just to block traffic and she answered, "I think they just don't know how to get downtown."
I live in Pittsburgh. Pretty much everyone I know in the city is either working from home, like myself, working in remote locations or not working at all. The area where my office is located had some smashed windows at banks and restaurants. The unauthorized protest that happened yesterday in the Lawrenceville neighborhood looked like it had just as many media people as protestors in attendance.
I can't wait for this whole debacle to be over. Almost there...
@DanaeGanymede: Pittsburgh didn't deserve this. (Detroit? Maybe.) Did anyone ask the mayor why he would invite this traveling circus of violence to your hometown? G-8/20 protestors' destructiveness is well documented.
You tolerated the red light cameras. You tolerated the detainment of people without charges. You tolerated torture. Now a militarized police is in your country. Congratulations.
