In the twenty-year history of Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton(?) American politics, here are the five biggest stories respresenting the greatest political achievements, from greatest to less great:
1. George W. Bush's fundraising, 1999-2000.
2. The large governor of a small Southern state (a/k/a "Bill Clinton") defeating an incumbent Republican president, 1992.
3. George W. Bush's consolidation of the Republican base, 1999-2004.
4. Bill Clinton's surviving impeachment and thriving in his last two years in office, 1998-2000.
5. Laura Bush's enduring popularity, 1999-present.

Anyway, our country has really changed in the past 8 years if hack establishment journalists are now sucking the dicks of Democrats. Notice how Halperin doesn't mention a single thing that Obama has done, policy-wise. His list is like: his chief-of-staff makes the trains run on time. He doesn't respond to criticism at all. He's not emotional.
And that's why ideological journalism is ultimately better than this supposedly-non-partisan-but-somehow-still-allowed-to-give-opinions bullshit that CNN and Time and the Washington Post love so much. If you made Matt Yglesias write a list like this, he'd name policies that Obama has pursued. Alternatively, give it to a conservative who actually cares about conservatism and he or she would likewise point to policies and results.
This guy, meanwhile, is writing shit that no one gives a fuck about. Which makes him highly influential. Obviously.

It's not Obama's fault that despite his very best, most gracious and courteous outreach to the GOP, they slapped him down and have chosen to behave as the petty, intransigent, obstructionist crybabies we know that they are. "Bi-partisan centrism" is a recipe for nothing to be done. And I don't recall such plaintive mewlings from the likes of Halperin in the last 8 years. "Bipartisan" to his sort means, "doing what Republicans want or they'll hold their breath and pout".
"So where do you want to eat?"
"I'm thinking of Italian."
"Really? I'm thinking we go eat burnt tires at the junkyard. I guess we'll have to compromise."

There are more that a few hundred thousand tea-baggers that are upset about the mortgaging of our future. Incidentally, this isn't just our children's' future. Unless you are an ailing octogenarian these policies are going to have a direct impact on your life.
