Best bonus ever! I DVRed Jimmy Fallon last week (I know, I know) because the Pixies were performing, and I just got around to turning it on now, and it turns out that Weezer had performed at the very end of Conan and it's almost entirely caught on my recording. Who would've thought Jimmy Fallon would bring such goodness??
Also, Rivers Cuomo is adorable, and I gotta say, while I'm not nuts about the rest of the album, I do like the single.
Not so adorable? The hideously unfunny Fallon. Oy.
@DahlELama: I know!
This reminds me of the full week! that Morrissey was the musical guest on Craig Kilborn's show. It didn't compute but Moz seemed fond of him.
Also, current cds in queue right now in my ride:
~Pixies
~Morrissey
~Smiths
~New Order
~Siouxsie & The Banshees
This is music for grown-ups now, right?
@phlox✔: Absolutely! I've been ODing on the Pixies, Weezer, and the Decemberists lately, but I found someone in my office's iTunes network with a wonderful collection of 90s hard and alt rock that is providing fabulously nostalgic afternoons filled with Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Poe, and Stabbing Westward.
I don't think there's any way for me to explain how much I love Weezer. This band got me through every goddamn break up since the 8th grade, and I swear to god one day Only In Dreams will be my wedding song. Get well soon, RC!
@James Del: Jesus, dude. "Only in Dreams," really? You and my ex-girlfriend, both. She failed out of Tulane in two semesters and U of A in three, got addicted to blow somewhere between but definitely first semester/Tuscon, and I haven't seen her in four years. So: deal, broken. You're out of the running.
Not feeling the last album, or the two before that, but the Blue Album, Pinkerton, and the Green Album make up for any sins--musical or otherwise--that Rivers Cuomo could ever hope to commit. Also, saw them live this summer and they were so, so much better than I'd dared to hope. Glad to hear the fam is OK and here's hoping he's back on his feet soon.
Over the years, I've come to the conclusion that, no matter how bad Weezer's newer stuff may be, it's still impossible to not love Rivers Cuomo. We need somebody out there in the "rock world" cheesing out in music videos and writing songs with people via Youtube. That shit is important.
@skt.smth: The fact that they're likeable makes it an even more sad, dispiriting and existential experience when one of their new songs comes on. What the hell happened?
@Benny: What can I say? After hating them for years, I've recently developed a new appreciation for them. I think of Rivers Cuomo as a sort of Weird Al figure who isn't directly parodying anything. What you realize after a while is that this is a guy who "just wants to rock" and basically gets to live out that dream in an increasingly flamboyant manner for the simple reason that Weezer albums continue to sell. The more self-indulgent Cuomo gets, the funnier and more ingratiating a figure he becomes. It's impossible to take Weezer's new stuff seriously, and while that pissed me off in the past (with the "Green Album," for example), I've come to accept it as their raison d'etre. Just think of him as somebody you're supposed to have a laugh with. It makes Weezer 1000x better.
@You Cannot Untoast: Oh come on! "Goddamn you half-Japanese girls / You do it to me every time / The red-head says you shred the cello / And I'm jello, baby!"
@skt.smth: Sure, but old Weezer are one of my favorite bands. The first two albums are classic. I get that they're having fun (maybe?) and collecting a paycheque or whatever... but... I'd rather they were still awesome. Cos they were once.
@eatsshootsleaves: I always thought that line was 'shared the jello'. Could my performance of El Scorcho at the church concert when I was thirteen have been lyrically inaccurate?
It just seems like so many of the comments are based on people's emotional attachment to the Postal Service. If you feel, for example, that the Postal Service's album and lyrics "shaped your college experience," then of course you're going to lash out at some facsimile of that music. You want to own it. You want to be the song. Be the song that you hear in your head But let go because you can't. Even in the discotheque. I agree that there are striking similarities between Owl City and the Postal Service. And I agree with the totally subjective statement that the Postal Service is superior to Owl City, but whether there's some actionable claim against Owl City under IP law is the Postal Service's issue. I suspect they're shrugging their shoulders. A lot of people have a fantastic, brilliant and wonderful attachment to Give Up. Don't let that emotional response to that brilliant album make you bitter. You'll be growing through this a lot as you age, trust me. This won't be the first of your sacred cows to get the pop cultural makeover. Having said that, I may take this all back if they ever really do make Heathers the TV show or Heathers the musical.
I'm usually a so-what-who-cares kinda guy when it comes to this stuff but this really is impressively rip-offy, moreso than that stupid Kanye song that sampled Daft Punk (which, I know, in turn sampled Edwin Birdsong). And the lyrics suck. I really would have enjoyed another Postal Service album, but this clearly isn't it.
This rule of thumb usually comes in handy for me most frequently over on i09, but it works here as well:
Pointing out when things resemble other things on the internet isn't as valuable a skill as you might want it to be.
That said, the only thing that sounds similar here is the vocal delivery and vocal effects. And yes it is remarkably similar.
So what? Anyone who thinks this type of thing doesn't happen all the time everywhere to every popular band, always has, and always will, is pissing into the wind. Just happens to be a glaring example readily at hand here.
And yes, major labels are evil and wittle bitty indies like Sub Pop are pure of heart. <3 But no matter how much major label music sucks in your opinion, it will never, ever effect your ability to listen to thousands upon thousands of new, unheard, indie or local, or avant garde or whatever bands. Just stop looking for music in places where major label music occurs and you will avoid this problem.
Uhh, I lost track of who I was supposed to be mad at by the end here. I'm gonna go over there now...
