@somethingsfishy: Duly noted. I realize there are several accepted transliterations of the Arabic term, but I have never yet seen "Al Quaida" in print before. The consensus seems to be on "Al-Qaeda." (NYT goes with that.)
The thing is that there was a terror alert for all the nation's mass transit systems for today, September 22. Which just happens to be International "Car Free Day."
Morning rush in DC was the most crowded it's been since the inauguration.
@lionel-mandrake: "The A, C, E and 1, 2 and 3 trains were shut down at Penn Station during the evening rush hour due to a suspicious package, which was later determined to be a used disposable catbox belonging to BettyCrocker. Daisy the bomb-sniffing K-9 squad dog is expected to make a full recovery."
It's good that this is being handled by the authorities without a lot of hoopla and cable-news hysteria, but have we the public gone too far into the blase zone on the terror meter? No one who could have been, or still could be, blown up by these guys seems too shaken, even though many of the cell members are still out there and may have explosives. Apparently this time the scare was justified. Is this lack of interest the legacy of the Bush administration's empty alerts?

What is gained by freaking out about it? I guess as a New Yorker I'm at peace with the idea that terrorism happens, and comforted by the knowledge that there is an army of law enforcement and intelligence types working overtime to make sure it doesn't happen to us. What else can we do but put our faith in them?
Is this lack of interest the legacy of the Bush administration's empty alerts?
Ding ding ding! Thank you, Dick Cheney, for robbing us of the ability to discern between when we are in actual danger and when the government is just sadistically jerking our collective chain to get us to vote Republican.

Later, you'll be watching the news and hear, "the suspicious package appears to be a stool specimen belonging to one Lionel Mandrake."
