If you want to see a cool/strong gay character on TV, go to Weeds on Showtime. It has 2, yes, TWO gay characters:
Sanjay played by Maulik Pancholy and DEA Captain Roy Till played by Jack Stehlin. BTW, totally caught the PC "the way God made you." Thought that was great. Also thought that the voiceover in the promos was Pacino. Happy that it was McShane.
The music in the first clip was Liszt’s Liebestraüme (Love-Dream). Not sure what it portends to set a scene like that to a schmalzy and overplayed bit of programme music; I would’ve gone with something weightier, probably something liturgical with a big choir like angels from above.
Second scene was awesome ... wish I’d watched this.
@iplaudius: How about something out of the Magnificat? Would Suscepit Israel be too close to the thematic content? Pergolesi has a beautiful version whose music would fit well.
@iplaudius: Okay, this isn't really important and probably will never get read anyway, but I feel the need to point it out: the piece in the clip is actually Liszt's Etude in Db Major, also known as "Un Sospiro." Just had to get that off my chest, because it's one of my favorite piano pieces of all time and is absolutely gorgeous.
(And I'm just commenting now because I finally got to watch the pilot. I thought it was wonderful - great synopsis, Richard.)
It'll never last. NBC screws up or passes on anything that could be watchable and noteworthy. (See Mad Men, they couldn't understand the premise, and Heroes, what shite that show's become.) I don't trust them with original, thought provoking, dare I say marginally SyFy (Urgh, that's so friggin abominable) programming. They should stick to what they know...new reincarnations of Law & Order and shows that obviously star men that look like John Krasinski.
Hey, Richard, Alex Cabot is back on SVU! Woot! And it looks like she's got a secret.
@Spirit Fingers: ZOMG! The return of Alex Cabot was the highlight of my week. Let's hope that Ms. No-Inflection McShouts-Her-Lines stays on "special assignment."
@rina: Oh, that's where they sent her, "special assignment?" I thought she went to that place where the blonde-awful-acting faux Benson replacement currently dwells when Hargitay was on maternity leave. I'd like to never see her again, thank you. She just confused Stabler and made me want to punch the TV.
@rina: Well, yah, Stabler's a meathead, but he's so needed to whup-up on all those third act guys, you know after you find out the skeezy dude after the first doink, doink, has a good alibi, but not before Wong says ever so calmly, "Well, he's a psychopath..."
Eh, I was underwhelmed. Most of the cast was good - I adore Al Swearengen, and thought Jack was great - but David just looked like the poor man's Matt Damon, and his love interest could not have been more anonymous. The pacing was turgid, and it's clear the production values won't be sustained after the pilot (see, e.g., Pushing Daisies). I applaud NBC's balls in green-lighting this, but, in the end, it's just another foreign property NBC has watered down until it's blander than the original.
I've seen the first 20 minutes (my TiVo is waiting patiently for me to finish) and so far I totally agree. I'm also pretty weary of "gay" being used as shorthand for "weak, louche, and spiteful". Not that I demand a gay hero character, necessarily, but couldn't we have one that isn't either comic relief or a villain?
@LucilleMcGillicuddy: I got a totally different read off of prince Jack, weirdly. I thought this is a kid who is trying to be PR-savvy and concocting this image to fit what his father would prefer seen, who is very aware of how he needs to command in battle and earn respect, and who gets summarily blasted out of the water by this random David.
I'm not getting the "evil gay villain" off this kid. I think he's more complex, and that stairs scene sold it for me. Poor guy.
@LucilleMcGillicuddy: Well - I would agree except that he teamed up with his uncle - the evil Corporate CEO dude at the end....and that guy is suppose to be evil, so.....I think Jack's character is headed in that direction.

But yeah, I think she's on special assignment at the Justice Department or something. I hope she finds herself at the wrong end of a terrorist plot.
