As for commenting - according to my profile, my ability to comment is not enabled. Which is curious. Don't think I've said anything more offensive than usual lately. And, clearly, I am still able to comment. Colour me confused.
So someone already posted a Ramstein video for SnuggleBuggle (blame the cute on 1/8th jigger of very old scotch 10 hours ago). Chag Samayach all you self-hating white people.
@gargamel:
Actually he is. He's THE most closeted jew ever. Saw Billy Crystal ask Dave about his Bar Mitzvah. This was in the 80's. He answered in the affirmative and then quickly moved on. The audience giggled thinking it was a joke. Since then, I watched Dave squirm everytime some comedian gets his Jewdar going. One will typically say something in yiddish and follow with "but of course you have no idea what that means". Watch for it. Its fun. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think he is a yid.
It may be the bottle of wine and accompanying beer, but this episode of SNL is pretty funny. This should have been the season opener. I mean, Madonna? (her performance aside.) And the "guests" on Weekend Update? Hammond hit it. My theory: any coincidence this funnier episode contains less Will Forte?
@The Marble Faun: If you're consuming one of those Belgian cherry-flavored lambique brews with a 16 % alcohool content, then yes, it's definitely the beer. PS: STFU, snug, you're officially hogging the thread.
@The Marble Faun: Wine + Beer? I like your style. Something sucks? just add alcohol. (Seems i'm gonna need some for this Gaga song) WHAT THE HELL IS A DISCO STICK?
@erinna: Yeah, that whole sketch totally fell flat. I was so annoyed at the premise that Obama hasn't done anything that I didn't find any of it funny. And there was so much they could have gone after too - like how Congress is fucking up healthcare or something that at least had more of a chance of being funny (and true). Just terrible.
@snugbug: No, I take that back. The T.E.E. video looks more than a bit like "Metropolis," and I'm pretty sure Lars von Trier ripped it for his opening sequence in "Zentropa." See what two glasses of good wine do to you?!
A-ha-ha.. Good Ramones video. Sorry, though, I'm team Johnny Thunders all the way. I'm sticking this video of their "Chinese Rocks" Ramones-cover non-hit/cult-song here, but COULD IT BE ANY CRAPPIER? Sheesh! Were even the DPs high on Chinese rocks in the '70s?
So, do you guys mind if I use this as a forum for quality control? As a blogger, I love to write off commenters as people who are on this website that aren't paid to be. Which is funny to me! But some of you guys are (on occasion, frighteningly) astute. So: how're we doing here on the weekends? (AND DON'T SAY "GOOD"). Is there something we're fucking up? Is there something you'd like to see more of? Etc. Let's do some consumer polling.
@Foster Kamer: I know you're only one person, Foster, but one thing I can think of that would make weekends on Gawker better are more frequent posts . . . .
I really like the Saturday open thread being back, as an aside.
@Foster Kamer: Hmm, let's see. I went into my usual coffee shop today and a queue of non-regulars were taking forever to order, trying to pay by credit card, which the shop does not accept, and generally not getting with the program. Usually, it's boom boom boom, say hi to a friend or two, order my drink, and I am on my way.
That's kind of the problem with the weekends compared to weekdays. I don't know what you can do about it but it doesn't flow as smoothly. The posts seem fine but too many of the weekend commenters don't seem to get the tone of the place. The percentage of overly earnest comments goes way up, which is really annoying, at least to me. Maybe you should make them take an Improv class or two before giving them commenting privileges.
One suggestion - Get people coming back to check in on regular topics. It will create traffic and more community. This open thread might be a good one. I think Phyllis's wedding announcements post is fantastic. Maybe you can find another anchor tenant for the weekend to build the other posts around.
And take care of your regular commenters - they can be your best allies.
@Foster Kamer: This is just a small, trivial observation, but I really like the fact that you read the comments in your posts, value the opinions of the commenters, and actively engage in the discussion.
@Phyllis Nefler: .So you ended up looking like Kevin Bacon in "Hollow Man," aka one of the criminally underrated big Hollywood flicks from my one of my favorite underrated filmmakers, Paul Verhoeven? [Click straight through to 5:52 for the full-impact visual point.. =)]
@Foster Kamer: I think the weekend could be a great place for more inter-Gawker Media fraternizing; I always sort of enjoy the interplay between Gawker commenters and those from Deadspin or Jezebel. It's like a happy trainwreck.
@Foster Kamer: Overall a fine job, but here are two types of posts i would like to see on the weekends:
1. A post specifically designated the "drunk" post, so that commenters who have had a few too many (myself, for instance) will have someplace to go to ramble on about who the fuck knows what; and
2. A post that baits the red-highlighted Glenn Beck nutjobs into spewing their craziness, so that us drunk libruls (myself, for instance) will have someplace to go to ramble on about how southerners are all bible thumping, gun toting weirdos with minimal education and maximum toothlessness.
@Foster Kamer: Don't have much feedback on what gawker is fucking up, but I do have something that I love & that's your gossip round-ups! I make sure I read them every weekend - they are far more creative than the weekday posts. Your Kristen Stewart one from this morning is a great example - I died laughing! So just wanted to say thanks instead of complain! :)
@Foster Kamer: My advice? When you engage with commenters, be nice to them (e.g., don't make fun of them for contributing to Gawker without getting paid). And don't engage with the assholes and trolls. Ignore them.
Otherwise, don't change at thing. The weekend here rocks!
@Foster Kamer: I check here between Columbo episodes I pop into the DVD as background noise + as a break from researching Walmart's Sustainability Index. The weekends are fine (especially since you've taken them on?), but what happened to T.A.Negro (TAN)? Just curious, not really missing those posts.
This video reminded me of something I'm pissed about. I'm pissed that CBGB's closed. And I'm pissed that its a f&cking John Varvatos store. Shouldn't that have been a landmark? I can't believe the home of so much amazing rock and roll was allowed to close. Plus, you could go there and get hammered on super cheap crappy alcohol and it was fabulous.
@erinna: You're upset that CBGB's is gone and not landmarked? Well, Max's Kansas City over near the northeast corner of Park Avenue South is now a Korean deli/buffet place.
I really don’t know what’s better or worse, but when it comes to rock clubs, you can’t live in the past.
But man, I am VERY pissed that NYU forced the Bottom Line out and made way for what? "Violet Cafe" or some junk like that? The Bottom Line has tremendous historic significance, and NYU knew that and forced them out.
Oh, and the Palladium... I pass by those dorms and just cringe. That’s the best NYU can do? Gut a place, kill it’s purpose and just create more housing for students?
I mean NYU was always a very liberal arts focused school and they owned theses historic properties and did squat with them. I find that sick.
@erinna: Okay, first, this is awesome. Second: you've gotta understand the entire situation behind CB's. It involved a non-profit; it involved eminent domain; it involved Hilly Kristal being a moron and not a businessman. CB's was never in the business of making money and the only thing on Manhattan that's truly safe as a landmark is Central Park (hopefully). Varvatos, despite being a capitalist cockface (or an "artist" selling $2,000 suits), swept in and bought it before Chase, who wanted the space for a banking outpost, could grab it. He preserved a lot of the original building, which was a shithole. He still has concerts for up and coming bands (even if they are all pretty punk rockers instead of glue huffing psycho teens). So, to his credit, he's the best possible outcome that space could've had. And yes, I know: it's part of his image. There are worse ones out there. When Varvatos gets edged out, be scared.
@Foster Kamer: Thats a good point about Varvatos. I just get really annoyed b/c I feel like everything is turning into a Chase or Pinkberry. I mean- there are TWO Chase branches in a 3 block radius of my apartment!!!
@Foster Kamer: Chase seems to like opening bank branches in historic spaces; they took the original Second Avenue Deli location, IIRC. (Mmm, pastrami.)

If anyone's got some sleazy liaisons in his past, I'm guessing it's Maher given his fondness for the Playboy Mansion over the years.
