What of those deemed unworthy? Must jeers and mockery spoil their most blessed wedding day or is there a face-saving safety paper? Surely, The Greensheet is not the only alternative.
I generally do not read the NYT because it generally caters to people such as Mr. Emrich. I have new respect for it, at least the Weddings/Celebrations editor, since he stuck to his guns. Sousa and Keen deserved to be admired. They have overcome tremendous odds and that should be applauded. +3
@momof3wildkids: I generally do not read the NYT because it generally caters to people such as Mr. Emrich.
Mr. Emrich sounds like a pretty old, pretty conservative man. A viewpoint that most people wouldn't categorize as the predominant viewpoint of the NYT. At least, most people would think it was old and LIBERAL.
@Pope John Peeps II: I'll agree with old and I'll up you one with cantankerous.
Not so sure about conservative though. Most conservatives I know like the 'pull yourself up by your bootstraps and kick ass' story. Not many of us appreciate the stories about Harvard graduates, who are the 3rd generation of attorneys to graduate from that fine institution.
As a single Jewish woman of a certain age and with no prospects, I scan this section every week for the words "Rabbi so-and-so officiated..." It gives the impression that the Jewish population of the US is about 50% and gives me hope.
The Times Wedding section was the best part of the Sunday paper when I was 14. Now I'll just check it out to play "Spot the Mayflower Descendant" or to see if I know anyone, which happens weirdly often. Strangest connection was reading about the wedding of a woman who was my bunkmate at summer camp in 1993.
@Baroness: I got way too down-the-rabbit-hole about Universal Life ministry to draw the requisite attention to those internationally acclaimed ladies. But I tried like five different times to figure out how to segue to them!
@Phyllis Nefler: Forgive me for misspelling arbitrix, dear. And when will the Times apologize to poor Charlotte York for that Hitler mustache on that reality show? Craven of them.
Somebody's (great-grandfather's?) achievements, not necessarily the actual bride's or groom's achievements. Quitting heroin or meth is a hell of a greater achievement than degrees from universities with buildings named after your ancestors.
Um. Isn't it possible that Beth Rose Feuerstein sent the same question to both columns, and neither Cohen nor his editors (quite understandably) read Philip Galanes' column?
Also, they both seem to have failed to mention to the questioner that it is a bit, um, CRAZY to call the ER to check on whether your online would-be date is lying.
@VoxPopuli: I agree... I'm more curious about his deeper motives. Does he have some obscure fetish where he can only get off if a random woman thinks he's in the ER?
Another nitpick, Gawker - if you're going to dish the dirt on ethical lapses by the Ethicist, then don't refer to his column as being about Morals! Ethics and Morals are two different things. Two gaffes don't make a right.
Sorry to be nitpicky, but I think you mixed up Cohen's response with Galanes'. Too many advice columnists ruins the ability to point out their dueling lameness.
I'm just mad last week's Magazine printed the wrong answer to the crossword puzzle. They didn't even bother to print it this week. (I know you can find it online, but still, what kind of editing is going on over there?)

I don't have any achievements to speak of, so you'll have to read about it in the Star-Ledger.

Oh, I'm rooting for them; they seem full of win- but we all know Phyllis will be the arbitix of that! Which is as it should be.
