I just found this clip on youtube last month, Former United States Ambassador to the United Nation Andrew Young who help crafted the Zimbabwe constitution back in the late 70s.
The hate for Zume by the west can be traced back to Africans fighting for land reform, especially in those mineral rich souther countries. the rape case is just another smoke screen.
@wetworker: The Zimbabwe constitution was fine until Mr. Mugabe dismantled it and became a dictator, starved and tortured his people. http://www.sokwanele.com/thisiszimbabwe/
And as for Mr. "Bring Me My Machine Gun" Zuma, please! Land Reform - hah! Not while he is in the pocket of Big Business.

@BeachLover:
The constitution was not fine; the Zimbabwean government fully understood that they were giving up something but in return Britain and American would honor the agreement they made and compensate the white farmers for their land. Britain would give one billion dollar over 10 years and America 75 million a year for 10 years.
As the former US Ambassador to the United Nations stated he helped wrote the constitution and it was his understanding as well as the Zimbabwean government that Britain and American would honor their part of the agreement, they did not, plain and simple.
As for Zuma in the pocket of Big Business, what politician is not and what other choice does he have? Until more Africans own the majority of the wealth in that country they are walking a tight rope.
Not to confuse things with unnecessary context, but Zuma was only acquitted at his trial for rape, and had various corruption probes into his dealing quashed, because he's the head of the country's ruling party. If you read *anything* about the trial, he's a pretty scummy guy. Also, he and Guardian newspaper reached a mutual settlement, there was no actual libel trial.
HamNo, I admire your work, but regarding Zuma, please do a little research. Having lived in South Africa, I know a fair bit about this horrendous case. Also rape is an epidemic in SA and if a dozen men a year are convicted I would be shocked.
"The accuser, Zuma's deceased friend's daughter, was known by Zuma to be HIV positive. On 8 May 2006, the Court dismissed the charges, agreeing that the sexual act in question was consensual. During the trial, Zuma admitted to having unprotected sex with his accuser but claimed that he took a shower afterwards to cut the risk of contracting HIV. This statement has been condemned by the judge, health experts, AIDS activists and the public in general."

"Mr. Zuma sued the paper for libel after it published an article in March claiming Mr. Zuma was guilty of rape, corruption and bribery...
The newspaper's owners, Guardian News And Media Ltd., have agreed to pay an undisclosed sum and legal costs."
