    Has Broadway ever considered making ticket prices affordable for the 8 million New Yorkers who might actually frequent the theater were it not exclusively a splurge for Midwestern tourists and daytrippers in from Westchester?


    Isn't the West End relatively cheap?

    I'm not too embarrassed to admit I had some relatives in town last month and they took me to see this. It was...ok. I laughed a few times, but mostly tried my hardest not to fall asleep.


    The worst part though was the end, when people actually stood up and gave a standing ovation. How low are your standards if you give this a standing ovation?! Or have I not been to Broadway in so long that everything gets a standing ovation?

    @pantsonfireliarliar: Sondheim said in the docu Broadway: The Golden Years that theater used to be mainstream, but now is an "event" for most people. And standing O's are the audience's way of asserting that they were a part of the evening they just paid a fortune to witness.


    It's a cynical observation, but true. And yes, almost alls shows (musicals, anyway) get standing O's no matter how bad they are.

    I saw an interview with Mel Brooks about the show, and when he was asked about the inflated ticket prices he said, "there's lobster salad and there's tuna salad, it's up to you to decide what you can afford." No arrogance at all, then.
