    Spin, spin, spin...

Wikipedia are claiming to have reached their $6 million goal in their fund drive. However, even though the campaign only began in November, they're using 1 July 08 as the start of the campaign - in other words, they're having to include old donations.

Worse, they're also including $2 million pounds of 'major gifts and foundation support'. 'Foundation support' is obviously something different from gifts, but if its not gifts, then doesn't that mean it has to be paid back?!

    Yep - welcome to Valleywag!!

"But what do I find? Attention seeking, foul-mouthed, and manipulative blogging."

But what's even worse is the commenters who post criticisms without being specifying about what their criticisms are about... ;)

For example, 'foul-mouthed'? Explain or retract.

Believe it or not, he does this every year. The wikipedia yearly beg.

Instead of a non-profit organization working on becoming more cost-effective and restructuring, they want to throw out year-old systems and buy the newest toys all over again. Even though their hardware was top notch a year ago and still works now.

IMO, all they need money for is bandwidth and some lawyer on retainer ($25K a year). Perhaps every 3-4 years 25% of their hardware can be replaced with mediocre equipment. Everything else is fluff.

Wales wants transparency, let's see what this organization buys.

I dated Jimmy for a while in the mid-90s and I have to say this doesn't surprise me in the least. He was sleazy then, and he's sleazy now. I'm glad I cut him off when I did.

@YokoOdysseus: Jimbo sleazy? What evidence do you have to back-up such a serious accusation?

    Compare:

and the first paragraph on Jimbo's user page:

The large banner on Wikipedia states: "Please Read: A Personal Appeal From Wikipedia Founder Jimmy Wales"

Geez... Seriously, for how long is Jetset Jimbo going to continue with this lie? Even the Wikipedia community accepts that Wales is merely the co-founder of Wikipedia - it states in the article on Wikipedia: "Larry Sanger and Jimmy Wales are the founders of Wikipedia."

It's so ironic that the purpose of an encyclopedia is to be a reliable source of facts, and yet Jimbo is using his fundraising message to perpetuate his lie about the origins of a top ten website.

@michaellamb: I'm by no means pro-Sanger - I think his alternative to Wikipedia is no better. I'm pro-truth.

See, I knew there would come a time when you'd have to pay for Wikipedia's erroneous and misleading information.
