    Cuomo, however, beats Giuliani head-to-head. So in short, Paterson needs to get lost. What exactly has he been good for, anyway?

    H2H pre-campaign doesn't have much meaning, I'd rather see the negatives on Paterson, but you've given me a bit of pause there. That's a big margin. Hmm.

    Alright, I'm in for the plan. Let's send the White House Chief of Staff blundering into the fray to officially bless the candidate like a modern-day Boss Tweed. Because it certainly won't come off like a selfish, partisan distraction!

    @Unsolicited Advice: I agree the WH didn't handle this as smoothly as they could have, but I'm with them in spirit. There is virtually nobody I wouldn't throw under the bus to avoid "Governor Giuliani," and lets face it--Paterson is way out of his depth. Of course, Cuomo's no peach, but... I think the WH is trying to ensure we're served the smallest shit sandwich on the menu.

    And could someone explain to me how a Cuomo candidacy is supposed to keep Rudy Giuliani from running against Obama in 2012? [gawker.com] If Rudy runs (and wins) against Paterson, he takes office Jan. 1, 2011, and no way he can immediately turn around and start running for president. On the other hand, scare Rudy out of the governor's race by nominating Cuomo, and hizzoner has nothing better to do that try again for the White House (which is a joke, but that's a different post). Again with the unintended consequences, Rahm.

    @naugahydeinplainsight: My guess is that the idea here is as much to open the door for Cuomo to run against Paterson as it is to push out Paterson. It will now be a wee bit difficult to make the race argument with Obama on board. If Paterson wants to get crushed in a primary, he can.

    I think this has nothing to do with Giuliani running against Obama, which no one is scared of under any circumstances. But Rudy's a formidable candidate for governor, and that's what they want to prevent. I don't think Cuomo chases him out, he just has a much better chance to win.

    That picture makes me think of Rahm the Vampire, and how, during her White House visit, he turned Stephanie Meyer into a sobbing pile of sexual need with single glance, and thus was born the Twilight book about how RPat's character leaves Bella and the vampire babies for a life in politics due to the hot machinations of this vampire mentor dude who is surprisingly JUST LIKE RAHM, but not, and then, somehow, an entire fanfic genre is born featuring Rahm, Jon Stewart and their put-upon sparkly houseboy RPat.

    @PandoraSpocks: Difference: Rahm was elected at least once. Even Dick Cheney at one point convinced enough people to vote for him to get into Congress. Rove was never elected to anything other than student council because he's a revolting worm.
