When I read the Witches of Eastwick I did not think, hey Updike's really breaking free from his usual misogyny. I am quite surprised that was his intention there. Good...try?
Yesterday, a commercial for this show advertised it as "Sex and the City in Salem!" which to me is sort of like saying "It's like Hocus Pocus, but shitty!"
I didn't hate this movie, but it wasn't overly memorable either. I understand that it has the potential for that technicolor quirkiness that's become popular a la Pushing Daisies and such, but again I'd love it if television was either a bit more original OR if they resurrected really good shows that were canceled unexpectedly, not because they were bad shows, but because they just couldn't get a good foothold. Case and Point...Kindred: The Embraced. I adored that show, and it has everything popular right now. Vampires...check. Good story...check. Was a Fox cult fave right around the time of 90210 popularity and Melrose Place...check, check. It was possibly a little before its time when it aired in 1996. Who cared about dusty vampires and their family clans then, right? But we do now. So it's kinda already primed for a Fox show reboot. Sad thing about Mark Frankel who played Julian Luna, though. But if done right it could be Brill, and if there's one thing Fox doesn't have right now it's a vampire show, especially a good one with layers.
@bettylou123: From your keyboard to G_d's ear.. Her Elfness is known for breaking newbie designers--notably Marjan Pejoski, who made that famous swan dress she wore at the Oscars..
It has been off for so long I had forgotten
how fun this show is to watch. I'm kind of
bummed Malvin is gone because I bet he
would have pulled out some seriously
entertaining work.
@LucilleMcGillicuddy: Agreed!! But I thought the greater sin on Project Runway was always poor execution and poor craftsmanship, not having an outrageous design concept! Especially not when Mr. Can't-Sew-A-Pillowcase-to-Pass-Home-Ec was already in the bottom three last week. Lifetime, what gives?
I know I said this on the live blog last night, but I just love Spell Check. She is regular folks. I can totally imagine running into her in the mall and having some Chick-fil-A with her.
Moylan, I hate looking like such a kiss-ass, but you are like dead-on with this... and I, too, am now team rebecca after this episode and years of mixed feelings about her (due to the divorce from John Stamos).
@Brian Moylan: Are you crazy? Jerry O'Connell is so much hotter than John Stamos! Just rewatch the first two seasons of Sliders on Hulu and you'll see what I'm talking about. Also, that's like his entire body of work, so it makes being a fan super easy.
@Brian Moylan: Thank you! I would take John Stamos at ANY age.
@misslinda: While I firmly believe Stamos trumps Jerry, it is important to remind you that O'Connell's work goes a little further back than Sliders... Remember, he was also an important chubby kid in a little movie called Stand By Me.
If it hadn't been for Malvin's chicken/egg monstrosity I would have had to vote off the jumpsuit. Why on earth would anyone think it is a good idea to put a pregnant woman in a one-piece pant-suit that looks like it would take an hour to get off?
Another thing I noticed: Top Chef is mostly straight men and mostly (seemingly) gay woman and Project Runway is mostly straight women and gay men. That's a generalization, sure, but pretty true, I think.
@downlow:
I see your generalization and raise you one:
straight women and gay men care about looks, since our worth is all tied up in that, so society tells us. Straight men and lesbians are free to eat and care intensely about food without anyone getting all judgey on their flabby butts.
