Do Magazines Invent Letters? Hell Yes!

Well, you've heard today from those who swear that each and every letter you read in a magazine has come directly from a reader (albeit one more than likely serving time on the orders of the state). Now, let's take a look at the other, more believable side. After the jump, voluminous evidence that certain publications—some of which you even read—play fast and loose with their letter section.

Genius Lessons: Thirty Bucks

At a gathering for 49 Nobel Prize winners in 1962, President Kennedy remarked that "I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent and of human knowledge that has ever been gathered together at the White House - with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone." All well and good, but this January 29th will see the greatest assemblage of magazine genius ever gathered together in the same room - with the possible exception of when Art Cooper had that fatal meal with Dave Zinczenko. To make matters worse, Redbook editor Stacy Morrison declares she is size 14 and — gasp — OK with it. Clearly, Seventeen editor and starvation expert Atoosa Rubenstein needs to give this woman a talking to. More »

Pity Covers Are the New Pity Fucks

Friday's breakup of Lance Armstrong and Sheryl Crow didn't just emotionally destroy Allure (Crow appeared on the February cover) — it seems to have resulted in bitter heartbreak for Redbook as well. Crow is the queen of their March issue, in which she proclaims, "Lance and I were and are just happy to be together."
Oh, sweet pea. No "are." You were happy to be together. Or maybe you weren't, all things considered. More »
