Okay, I'll admit it. I would like to be "opposite married" to this dish. It's just for a night, right? And then the next morning you walk around her three times and chant, "I divorce you," three times and, bada bing! you're good.
"I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some, people out there in our nation don't have maps and, uh, I believe that our, uh, education like such as, uh, South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, or, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future, for our children."
@J. Henry Waugh: Yeah, but we didn't because we didn't want crazy old John McCain and crazy young Sarah Palin in the White House. See how that works? You back people into having only one acceptable opinion when running for office and, chances are, they'll voice that one acceptable opinion.
When Republicans get over their holier-than-thou moral majority binge of the past 30 years, perhaps we'll be able to have some substantial debates on actual issues. Until then, this is the climate that conservatives have created.
The bible doesn't give women freedom of speech. If she's so into the bible as the authority of what is okay or not okay, she truly needs to STFU and be someone's concubine and all those other riches the bible bestows on women.
The anchors have decided this is a safe point to get with the conservatives, who all have a case of the saddie-sads right now.
I don't think it's that unfair. The competition has an interview portion (though their standards are low enough for it to be one question), theoretically this would mean that the young lass is supposed to be able to express herself elegantly.
I am pro-gay marriage, but I fully support Carrie Prejean's courage to voice her opinion.
Perez does not want a Miss USA who represents everybody. He wants a Miss USA who agrees with his political opinions. I'd much rather have a Miss USA with a backbone.
@Featherstonehaugh: What I find humorous is that Perez supported Barack Obama, who does not support gay marriage, and thinks that the "faiths", and the people that practice them, should decide what marriage is.
Wait, was this question asked of all contestants or just her? I haven't followed this story much.
I would have liked to hear Miss Utah's answer or maybe Miss Idaho's. What would Miss Wyoming have said?
The whole controversy is tilted and dumb, much like that bitch (his word, he defended it, he GLORIFIED IT), Perez Hilton. I've seen what he does on his website and he is NOT a defender of anyone's dignity.
She's a very sweet, passive-aggressive, super-hot and generic shikse. She makes the perfect victim and thus the perfect heroine. The reason so many people are rushing to defend her is the same reason that women who look like her get maximum media coverage when they go missing.
All she has to do now is make sure she doesn't talk too much about how Jesus rode dinosaurs around Jerusalem or the Satanic monsters lurking along the edge of the flat earth. If Sarah Palin is smart, she'll hire this girl to be her right-hand woman. A million straight men, liberal and conservative, will drop dead of heart attacks just from fantasizing about their lesbian makeout session. And the remaining ones will propel the Palin/Prejean team to victory in 2012.
Personally, I don't give a shit what anyone who isn't gay thinks about gay marriage. Quite frankly, it's not your goddamn business. If, however, you are gay and thinking about getting married, I do have a question:
Have you ever considered hiring a bluegrass band for your reception?
@Mediahohoho: The only problem is that for it to be politically expedient for politicians to support gay marriage, there will have to be greater popular support. Righteous indignation isn't going to win hearts and minds and doing the right thing is not going to win politicians. The sad truth is that even the institution of slavery had to largely fall out of favor before the people "who knew it was wrong all along" made their move. I'm hoping we can get this one settled with a little less bloodshed.
How far does your band travel? I'm not gay or getting married, but I would consider hiring a bluegrass band for my personal theme music.
@ChillbearLatrigue: Your right about politicians needing political cover. The Republican Party and the "Christian" "Right" also need to stop injecting fear into the debate in order to solidify votes and raise money, and that's not going to happen anytime soon.
As for personal bluegrass services, I'm going to go ahead and recommend that you buy a mutant banjo-picking blind prodigy to follow you around playing "Dueling Banjos." Has the same effect.
Let's face it, these contests are the "spokesmodel prelims." The verbal essay questions exist to determine if the beautayz can flash their smiles and shake their assets and not sound too much like idiots every time they open their mouths. Vanna White and Elizabeth Hasselbeck are both bigoted morons who somehow managed to keep their idiocy to themselves before they got famous; after they get famous, it really doesn't matter what they say. At the spokesmodel prelims, the objective is to be as innocuous and banal as possible. This chick almost pulled it off.
I'm pretty sure Ms. Idiot's bible wouldn't be condoning her tramping around in a swimsuit giving opinions about things. How un-biblical for a woman. Dope.
I don't share this woman's view of marriage, but what the hell is a question like this doing in a beauty contest?
"Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalise same-sex marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit. Why or why not?"
Have we actually deluded ourselves into believing that Miss USA is really about more than picking the hottest woman on stage? If it was really about substance, why would we adorn these women in different wrappings to sample their various looks?
The question was a litmus test to flex the muscles of the gay rights movement. I support the agenda, but not the tactic. This contestant was not a Supreme Court nominee and Hilton is not a member of the Judiciary Committee. There could have only been two results from asking this question. In either scenario, nothing is gained for gay rights. On the other hand, the homophobes now have a victim around which to rally.
I have no real dog in this fight. I'm not gay and I don't watch beauty contests. I do have a sense of right and wrong. People not being able to get married is wrong, but so is blindsiding someone because you are curious about her level of bigotry.
On the other hand...Perez Hilton is gay? When did all of that come about?
Yes, Hilton's question was a cheap ploy at best; yes, Hilton's unstated job (as well as that of actual newsguy Willie Geist of MSNBC, who was also a judge) was just to play along and have a good time ogling women (okay, maybe Hilton doesn't enjoy that as much). But I think you cannot pretend (as so many of these beauty pageants do) that this is about so much more than picking the hottest woman on stage and then act all surprised when someone actually decides to take the questioning portion of the contest seriously. Is it just a beauty pageant or is it something more? You can't cherry-pick when you're one or the other. So I think Hilton's question, while a cheap, self-serving ploy, was not technically out of bounds.
@DennyCrane: I just feel like she was invited to a party and then found out that she was really going to be shuffling odiferous relatives to the airport. Otherwise, maybe the girl who won was better looking. To be honest, I haven't seen any of the other contestants.
@ChillbearLatrigue: Can we PLEASE stop talking about "the gay agenda?" There is no fucking "agenda," unless you can wanting to be able to live one's life openly, honestly and with dignity an "agenda." Jesus.
