It wasnt the snobbery and it wasnt the sense of entitlement that really rankled me.
It was the unadulterated pleasure he seemed to be enjoying during his insulting tirades to Gayla Long.
In many ways he isn't wrong. Of course it's better to be educated than uneducated and a priveleged life brings many rewards that the unpriveleged dont know. Clearly living a healthy active lifestyle is in all ways 'better' than a life of sickness and health troubles.
The terrible part was the cruelty with which Stephen seemed to enjoy inflicting pain on Gayla. He told her he earns more in a month than her husband does in a year. I certainly have many close friends who could say that to me. BUT THEY DONT. Because it's crude and callous and would make me and others dislike them. If it really is true there is no need to voice it, least of all to Gayla herself.
He also called Gayle 'fat' to her face. Stephen is certainly not fat, but he is very far from the masculine ideal of beauty and Gayla could certainly have commented on his lack of musculature and his lack of physical beauty. She chose not to.
And finally his comments to his children that she is stupid because 'she doesnt have an education' seem so self congratulatory when most of us realize our educations come from pure chance in terms of family, heritage and upbringing.
Much has been made on the internet of his snobbery and 'classist' attitude. But I think the real reason to revile this douchebag is much simpler : He is a misogynist who enjoys humiliated a woman from a less elevated background and circumstances than his own.
And he humiliated her in front of his own children.
Asshole.

(this is why I avoid national TV appearances where I'm required to do other than sit still and smile)

With all them high falootin' advanced degrees between the two of you, I'm SHOCKED that you couldn't do the research required to prepare for this event. It really isn't much. It's not like the teevee was invented last March.

I saw the husband acting pretty boorish in the clips, but come on - some people are acting like it was somehow her duty to publicly repudiate him. No, it's her duty to stand by him. That's what being married to someone means. Not that you excuse their behavior - she isn't doing that - but when you take a marriage vow, you specifically pledge a legally binding oath to stick with that person no matter what (in so many words). You say that you accept that person even with all of their faults.
No, not every marriage really works like that (which is why so many end in failure), but to imply an expectation that someone would side with a group of what amount to strangers living a thousand miles away over her own family is a little unrealistic. And to snidely judge them for not immediately doing so is naive, and I don't know how else to put this, but young-sounding. It's an expectation that can only come from someone who's never been married. This is her life and her family. She can call her family out for their misdeeds, but at the end of the day, they are still her family and their lot is going to be intertwined forever. She's got a lot more invested in what they think about her than what we think about her.
My guess is that the second apology came after talking to her husband and both of them deciding together that this is what they need to say to put this behind them and get everyone off their backs. There's likely no big conspiracy here, nor any real problem between them (that there wasn't already before). And whether or not they're both "jerks" is kinda between them. I don't even have a lot of sympathy for the other family either - they chose to go on the same show, even knowing how the people on it tend to come off.

But it's unfair to label this woman and her husband the product of "San Francisco snobbery." Yes, they live there, but he, at least, is not a native American, much less a native San Franciscan. This kind of classism is to be found all over the US; it's not the product of one city or another, but education and personal social environment. Yes, these people may be millionaire over-educated tree-hugging liberals, but none of those things are unique to San Francisco - they may be found in any major city, amongst any group of college-educated, professional types.
I'm reacting to this because the "San Francisco snobbery" line harkens back to the ugly debate over "San Francisco values" not that long ago. Living in San Francisco is not the cause of this disease, or any other - merely a symptom, and a particularly meaningless one.

The ABC/WifeSwap casting dept and producers picked you because of the very characteristics that you feel shocked and embarassed by. Sorry babe, but being cast on reality television in any capacity is not, and will never be, a viable marketing opportunity. It is not a sign you are interesting. It is a sign that you are insufferable, dellusional, and most likely outright unhinged. Furthermore, these things must be apparent to anyone who has ever met you within five minutes for you to get even a first meeting with the producers.
Peace and love,
Everyone else

They have only two choices at this point. Either change their names and move to Australia (be careful not to burn out ALL the English-speaking countries) -or- get out of the exploiting fat people business and get into the exploiting people with Asperger's syndrome business.
Is there a list of which companies this VC is into yet? That should be fun.

I mean - she's saying "sorry", and that she asked him to get help. He won't do it, and I bet secretly she agrees with him - just that he said it, and she would have edited herself.
