Yeah, I know some people--all women--who worked for Gawker Media full-time and were subsequently laid off because Nick and Gabe have a chilling fear of women. When they applied for unemployment insurance, Nick claimed they were "contract workers" and didn't qualify, despite the fact that they worked full-time, had no other primary means of support, and were required to attend regular staff meetings just as if they were the tech staffers who are paid as full-time employees. The State of NY found against Denton for the one woman who brought it to court. But how can the other women get justice from these sleezy cowards who flaunt state and federal law in order to save a few bucks? #media
But Jezebel is part of Gawker Media and almost everyone (maybe even everyone) who works at Jezebel is female so I think its just a fluke there are no women posting stories on Gawker at the moment. #media
@Oryx Hearts Crake: Um. Gawker.com hasn't had a female writer or editor since they fired Sheils almost a year ago. Jezebel is Gawker's female news website. Gawker itself has a sickening history regarding employees and state law. Which they will pay for.
Pointing out that Gawker has an auxiliary site "for women" proves nothing. Are you, by the way, employed by Gawker? Because if you are, your comment can be considered collusion. Do you want to collude with Nick and that coward Gabe? I kind of think you don't.
Rethink your position. And everyone else. When the State and the Fed come calling, would you like to keep your cash, or do you want to spend it protecting Nick and his little dog Gabe?
I obviously don't work for Gawker. But there are only a small number of editors at Gawker so its just a coincedence that there aren't any women. #media

I heard, from a friend that worked at New York Press a few years ago that they were always very late paying writers and freelancers. There was one writer who had to have a letter sent from a lawyer threatening legal action if he wasn't paid.
Given the state of publishing and the fact the NYP is now owned by a company that owns a bunch of rags that no one reads, they're probably having the same problem now. #media
"I know what you're thinkin': 'Does he want 6,000,000,000 porn sites or only 5,000,000,000?' Well, seein' as how this is Firefox 3.5.4, the most powerful browser in the world and can blow your buttons clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well do ya, punk?" #google
I was wondering when someone would discover my evil master plan. Just wait until the next time you sign on to Twitter and find that my super-virus has replaced every # sign with a little picture of an armadillo. The Internet is powerless before my might!
Oh, also, I've been mixing up people's soup orders at Bennigan's...
@raincoaster: Hey now, I'm a Texan. And yes, some of us can read. But I wouldn't be surprised if executions in Texas received more news coverage out of state. Executions happen so frequently here, but they rarely make the front page. Considering that the majority in Texas consider executions such a triumph of justice, that is a shame.
The Texecutions beat - it's what you make of it! Steve Blow, longtime columnist for The Dallas Morning News, has long had a series listing what the condemned man's last meal was. In fact, when there was some loud opposition about the lack of taste (see what I did there?) the subject was dropped, only to be swiftly renewed after even more people complained that it was legitimate news.
@hot_kachina: An artist named James Reynolds did an interesting project, "Last Suppers"--recreating + photographing the last meal choices of Death Row inmates. It's both touching and creepy:
@dontread: Yes. It's significant art, I think. Because it wordlessly and elegantly challenges our knee-jerk reactions to people on Death Row. It's so hard to gleefully wish them dead when you see that their last wish was for fried chicken or a pack of gum. It humanizes them all over again. It's nibble-worthy food for thought. #journalismism
@snugbug: And always on institution-orange plates. Orange is my favorite colour! I never thought of it as background for a pastiche of death, gazing into the abyss. Sad. But on the other hand, you have the cutest expressions -- "nibble-worthy" indeed! #journalismism
@dontread: And Shane Koyzcan, multiple-time poetry Grand Slam champ, has an amazing piece about having a drink at 10am with the chef who prepared the condemned man's last meal. He'd just prepared the meal for the man who killed his (the chef's) brother. #journalismism
@snugbug: I agree. I've honestly cried reading these lists of last meals before. Yeah, maybe that's taking the bleeding-heart liberal thing too far, but I've met people on death row before. And no doubt most of them are awful people, but they are still human beings and knowing that they want their last meal to be, say, an ice-cream sundae is just heartbreaking to me. #journalismism
