Yo, Wingnuts! Stop trying to make this about Obama. It's not. It's also not about the U.S. Or even Israel. If you're so gungho about civil rights then go agitate for the people of Burma.
Truth is, like most of what happens in the world, this shit has nothing to do with us.
@Mediahohoho: This mostly makes sense, except for the potential for nukes and the Strait of Hormuz chokepoint issues, both of which directly effect the United States and our allies.
A free and prosperous Iran would only add goodness to the flavor of the world. Iran as it exists today is bitter indeed.
@El Matardillo: Whatever. Our fuckery in that part of the world can't be mitigated by more fuckery. Yes, we as citizens care about people being allowed to be free and prosperous.
Of course, we've got some strategic interests in and around Iran. Too bad we handed them their immediate neighborhood by invading Iraq. Oh well.
However, inasmuch as he's using the Presidential bully pulpit to the extent possible, can the opposition party get their hypocritical panties (two words: Tiananmen Square) out of their hypocritical asses and let the guy do his job?
Finally, Iran isn't close to nukes. They're not even close to having a non-military nuclear program. I wish people could remember our own intelligence assessments when it comes to little facts like this.
@SaraRueful: Killing a few of their leaders would change nothing. It's like pulling a few weeds. The whole Iranian "field of dreams" needs to be cleansed, root and branch.
The only thing that will help the Iranian people become free are guns. Maybe we should send them some.
@SaraRueful: It is a law (I think), but since there are military groups that nobody will talk about or even admit exist (Delta Force), assassinations could be done and are likely an option.
@momof3wildkids: A black ops group (Delta Force) would surely be working with the CIA.
I'm not saying that we shouldn't give Obama his due and propers with the whole "talking" route, but I'm not holding out much hope for a rational discourse with this government. His condemnation was much stronger yesterday with Chocolatier Angela Merkel. However, I still believe that Bush had this one right. Don't give Iran the world stage. I know people will say that got us nowhere, but I don't think we are going to get anywhere anyway.
@ChillbearLatrigue: Except for the "saber-rattling" directed at Saddam resulted in the $3T quagmire clusterf*ck that we'll (the world) will be suffering for decades from now.
Republicans have shown they're great at jumping in and breaking things up. Real good. Jumping in at the right things, or fixing everything up afterwards, not so much.
If the GOP ran things now as they did a couple years ago, we'd now be at war with not only Iraq and Afghanistan, but Iraq and Russia to boot.
The one thing I am glad about is that this election has reminded the world that Iran is a religious tyranny that simply costumes itself as democracy. I am shocked how many people had forgotten that. Go check out Jezebel's comment threads on the Snap Judgments leading up to the election if you doubt me.
@minou: @RonMwangaguhunga: C'mon, I get all of my Middle East political insight from anonymous commenter's opinions on feminist/celebrity/fashion blogs.
Is everyone forgetting this statement by President Obama?
Obviously all of us have been watching the news from Iran. And I want to start off by being very clear that it is up to Iranians to make decisions about who Iran's leaders will be; that we respect Iranian sovereignty and want to avoid the United States being the issue inside of Iran, which sometimes the United States can be a handy political football -- or discussions with the United States.
@mattchew03: Well, when did he say that? When there was still a chance that this election was going to ACTUALLY reflect what the people of Iran want. And what is it with people flipping out when politicians change their positions on things? To me, that's a good thing, because it means they're actually paying attention to the changing state of the actual real world and not just sticking by their guns for no good reason.
Iranians need to monkey wrench this situation something fierce. In an overwhelming force deal like this the most they can hope for is to let themselves be beaten and killed in huge numbers until even the Republican guard gets tired of killing its own.
I know the chances are slim-to-none, and the coverage we see is pretty selective but I can't help but hope that the current regime's heavy-handed actions will swing some more Iranian support over to those in need.
What effort is being made to get the truth out to the rural Iranians who don't have Blackberries and such, the majority of the population (from what I read here yesterday)? There's other technology besides the new stuff.
What I want to know is what the World Football league is going to do about those players being banned for life. Europe takes its football about as seriously as religion, civil rights, and the law of gravity. I'd be nice to see a team that's somewhat sensitive to social issues like Barça make a big deal out of it.
Glad to see the President of the US is reaching out to the current Iranian regime that is killing it's own people over power. I had no idea that sitting back and simply "hoping" things will change would be a part of his foreign policy.
