In reply to CNN Apologizes to Rush Limbaugh
Sort of like the Dan "The whole damned story is true but the MSM will instead focus on whether '70s faxes used smart quotes" Rather incident.
The only minorities Rush spends times with live on the Dominican Islands and have an age-appropriate interest in Barbie dolls. #cnn

I was waiting for that sentence to be written before I could say this with complete confidence: we're doomed.

I notice that Glenn Beck isn't demanding that anyone apologize for saying that he raped and murdered a young girl in 1990, so it's gotta be true. Sad, really. I hear that little girl had a bright future ahead of her until she was brutally raped and murdered by Glenn Beck in 1990. #cnn

My hunch is that quote is completely fictional... otherwise we would have had a media field day about it when he actually said it. I usually find Rush is smart enough to not say outright racist things... though he's CONSTANTLY spewing race baiting garbage where the intent is racist, even if he can back off it and claim he's just providing discourse. Smart. And annoying. And awful. #cnn

It's hilarious that people have to apologize for using and believing fake quotes are true when Rush's career has been built on lies. Well, lies and lots and lots of Oxy's.

But still, how do we come to the standard of "OK, he didn't actually say that, but he did say this, so the point still stands"? In this same space I read tirades about falsehoods uttered by George Will, with no such leeway granted. If you are going to say he said racist things, stick to the actual racist things he has said. #cnn

@quotidian: The problem is that, in America, we tend to fall into this line of thinking where, if one fact is out of place, the whole argument falls. If one allegation of Rush making a racist statement is bogus, then it doesn't matter how many other legitimate claims you find, Rush is simply not a racist.

So I think it's a perfectly fine reaction to have, that sure, this one quote was bogus, but the others were legit, so maybe we can downplay the apology bit and reiterate that Rush is, in fact, still a racist. #cnn

@skt.smth: I understand what you are saying, but an important point here is that this is far from the first time that the bogus quotes have been trotted out and objected to as being false. So when folks trot them out again in the face of the fact that they have publicly been shown to be false, they should understand that their argument is weakened. #cnn

@quotidian: But not weakened in any significant measure when the bulk of the evidence still proves the point. That's the problem. We tend to act as though any shred of falseness negates the overall point. Okay, so this one quote is bogus. The others aren't. We were wrong to front a bogus quote, but Rush is still a racist goon. Unfortunately, Sanchez didn't make the point in that way. #cnn

@skt.smth: I will certainly concede that you are correct that a shred of falseness, meaning the phony quotes, does not negate the point. But as I said, the falseness of the quotes had been brought to light emphatically in the past, so I think CNN should have been quick to point out the problem, and it did not seem to care about accuracy of the record until pressured. Otherwise, the appearance is that CNN just doesn't care. I will also concede that I don't perceive Rush to be the racist that he is portrayed to be (which automatically makes me an insane idiot to many who read this site), but I have no problem with hearing arguments based on what he actually has said that would dispute my point of view. I am more interested in this in journalistic terms, in seeing how media outlets deal with issues of accountability. As I said, the Washington Post was pilloried on this site for allowing George Will to forward a falsehood; I wish for accountability for all. #cnn

@quotidian: Can you please stop using the word "quotes" and use the correct word, "quote," instead? "Quote." As in the singular. Please feel free to listen to every other quote brought up by CNN, which were 100% factual, for your argument "based on what he actually has said."

Disingenuous arguers are disingenuous on this site all the time so why am I bothering? Your repeated insistence on referencing some random "pillorying" of George Will coupled with the "Rush Limbaugh actually isn't as racist as he is portrayed to be" by his own quotes pretty much already tells us what we need to know. #cnn

What a drama queen. He made such a huge, over-enunciated deal of it. The quote wasn't a lie, he just couldn't get a 17th source for it. He could have buried this non-apology in a quick sentence in between stories, but he turns it into a 2-minute on-air wrist slashing. Sanchez, get a dick. #cnn

I didn't get CNNFail. I watched cnn that whole weekend (i was sick!) and they had great coverage. I think that ppl who participated in CNNFail weren't actually watching CNN.

and of course a legitimate news source can't just yank every 140 character breaking exclusive from twitter and put it on the air without it being substantiated - so, with the limited capabilities of television (as opposed to real-time updates from twitter and other social networking sites) in mind, I think the network did a pretty thorough job!

CNN has failed in its coverage -- if you can even call it that -- of Iran because for the past five years it's been hiring people based on the way they look and sound, not on their journalistic abilities.

As a result the only CNN person in Tehran is Christiane Amanpour, who got her job ages ago and would never have been hired today. As a result the network's "coverage" of the monumental events in Iran is a joke. The Daily Show did a good job of pointing that out on Tuesday night's show. Most of CNN's info is coming from Twitter. Which is just pathetic. It couldn't be any worse.

@El_Gato: The Daily Show has been making jokes about CNN's technology love for a while, it's their schtick for CNN. They were just continuing that. It wasn't some perceptive or particularly accurate observation in regard to their Iran coverage. CNN had Christiane already on the ground in Iran during the election. They have another guy on the ground there now too. They have had many excellent analyists discussing the events. The movement and access of journalists has been very restricted, so information from sources like twitter would be important no matter what.

Do you really think people like recent hire Fareed Zakaria are bimbos? CNN has lots of mediocre to plain looking people on camera and has kept them front and center when they could have been pushed to the side or dumped.

say what you want about CNN, howard kurtz, etc, they all need a good kick in the ass, but....

but if you guys are following the huffington post report in iran, which does have a lot of twitter info, they are constantly pointing out conflicting statements, false rumors, etc.

you can't report that plain clothes policemen are hezbolah until you have some proof.

while it's nice to have an alternative up to the minute source, it's not reliable and no serious news organization should base their reports on tweets from virtually anonymous people.

twitter is what it is, but it's not serious journalism.

If Twitter "reports" like the one above are where news is heading, then we're in big trouble. No context, no sources, no verification. I wonder how many of these Twitter updates are even true - no doubt many of them are based on rumor and hearsay. That doesn't help anybody.

I can't fall asleep tonight, just watching the Twitter fall for #IranElection. Part of me thinks this is totally amazing... but another part of me really, really hopes that the flaws of Twitter aren't doing damage in Iran.

I mean, right now I'm watching a cycling RT about this afternoon's 4pm rally being cancelled, which apparently was reported by the BBC, but there's a counter-flood of RTs saying that report is propaganda and everyone should hit the streets anyhow. So now we've got a BBC-sourced item that's being repeated, as well as an organic rumour(?) that's being repeated, and it all makes me very nervous when yet another tweet is saying that the militia have been issued live rounds and permission to use them.

Fingers crossed the worst doesn't end up happening. Though from this Canadian reporter's experience, there are already many, many men locked away in basements: [www.theglobeandmail.com]

(Canadian reporter not Jason Jones, though you've got to wonder how the Daily Show feels about their decision to send him to Iran now. Accidentally covering real news?)
