Not that weird. Until the GOP became synonymous with God, Guns and Denying Others Their Civil Rights -- in a shameless and mostly successful attempt to get terrified working class whites to vote against their own best economic interests -- it was just a big group of rich dudes trying to make the Free Market ever freer (for themselves).
Olson is pretty much an old-fashioned Rockefeller Republican, as extinct these days as the snow yeti.
@City_Dater: I'd say closer to a libertarian, but potato, potatoe. Whatever your terminology, I agree with your assessment of the GOP... I would have liked old-school conservatives, but I can't stand the GOP's social agenda.
Wow, I'm just shocked by this. He lost his wife in 9/11. You'd think if anything that would make him more intolerant. Every once and a while something like this comes along to remind me not to be so judgy.
Interesting but not so fun fact: while googling Mr. Olson to confirm that he was indeed the same guy whose wife, Barbara Olson, was on the plane that crashed into the Pentagon on 9/11/01, I discovered that Mr. Olson's birthday is also 9/11. That fucking sucks.
I've heard conspiracy-minded talk that this is an effort to take on an unwinnable federal case and lose, thereby establishing precedent that will be even harder to overturn. It's probably completely unfounded and seems pretty dastardly even for a staunch conservative, but I wouldn't put it past the legal mind that gave the country W.
