I saw the Polanski documentary, even the prosecuter thought that the judge was pretty much acting illegally. I think it mentioned that the prosecuter is now seeking no jail time, but Polanski was pushing for not even having to have a court appearance. (Which kind of makes him more of a "fugitive" than a fugitive.)

@Iceland_Spar: I went into that documentary thinking that Polanski was a huge scumbag....so right you are. They had already determined a sentence and a plea! Only the judge was a fucking media whore. The judge was beyond incompetent and should have been disbarred for the way he behaved. I'd stay in France forever if I were Polanski.

@SinisterRouge: I was exactly the same way - I went in thinking that there would be some soft, lefty, Euro spin about how the girl really wasn't all that young and why are Americans all prudes and was totally ready to hate it. Then it turned about to be quite good and I ended up being a little sympathetic to Polanski. If it is possible to posthumously disbar someone, California should start proceedings against that judge immediately.

btw - I had NO idea that his wife was a Manson victim. He has really had some horrific incidents in his life.

@Iceland_Spar: Oh yeah I knew that bit and thought "well that's terrible but that's no excuse!" Well after seeing what actually happened. That he had pled out and the judge just reneged on the deal...that was completely different. I would have run too! That part about his wife and the murders was absolutely fucking brutal to watch though right? So heartbreaking.

@SinisterRouge: Also, I have never been in a courtroom other than the day I was sworn in. But I'm pretty sure that if I came up with the idea "Hey, let's have a fake, scripted hearing in which I will tell all the parties what they will say. And if they don't play along I will crush them.", I would then stop and say - whoa, that is actually a totally crazy (and probably illegal idea). And that guy was a JUDGE?! Maybe Arnold could slip him a little pardon during this whole budget fiasco and nobody would notice until he was back.

In saw the documentary, too. What the Judge did was beyond belief, I would like to think I would have called him out on the record during that scripted hearing, but who knows...

I am up in the air about about the pardon, though. On one hand, there was judicial misconduct -- no question, and possibly prosecutorial, too. However, let's not forget, whether it was statutory rape or not, he raped/sodomized a teenage girl. Also, up to the point that the Judge pulled a 180, he was receiving fairly lenient treatment that no doubt was the result of his celebrity.@Iceland_Spar:

@ElvisWorley: You're probably right about the pardon - maybe just a commutated sentance for time served? (Which I believe would result in the sentance originally agreed on by the prosecution)

wow...i just watched the ET clip on brit's birthday...seriously, were lance bass and ciara the only ones to show up? it was a 2 minute clip and they didn't show anyone else.
