    I was staying in W Hollywood two years ago and wandered into some band's sound check and was able to hang around for an hour chatting and inhaling the perfumed air. If I had been just a bit younger I would have gotten laid too. So not every rock institution is dead.

    In X-The Unheard Music, Exene and John Doe give a tour of the Whiskey. She points out the broken glass on the air conditioner outside the window. John punched the window out the night Exene's sister died in a car crash on the way to see them play. I cry every time.

    Oh sure. This means rock is dead...but only if you belive '77 Noo Yawk punk is so garsh-darn important that its suspectability to crass commercialism taints the whole of rock. (Rock's got crass commercialism in its very DNA.)

    Somewhere on the winds of history is my L.A. Weekly review of the Pretenders at the Whisky. I wrote the whole thing as a single run-on sentence -- because I was 23, the alternative press wasn't yet run by a conglomerate, and you could do stuff like that.
