What got Friedman fired was his repetitive habits of "making friends" with you, then betraying your trust and insulting you, or a project you held dear, in his colulmn. He was constantly on the prowl for diner and lunch invites so he could get a paparazzi shot with a celebrity, or put it in his column next day. When those didn't come, he'd stamp his foot, fly into a snit and pound his keyboard till he felt better.
Roger, learn the logic. If you're acid, people regurgitate you. Eventually, networks regurgitate you. You're so toxic that someday your office chair will eject you. Ptheh!
Travolta played a role originated by Divine. That's as gay as you can get. It's okay, John. Your place in cinema history is set. You have money and jets. Come out and enjoy the rest of your life.
I can't imagine losing your son to your faith, albeit I lost my parents to a cult, but I would imagine it is harder to lose your own child because of the teachings of your faith.
There has got to be a lot of questioning and soul searching, which is what I expect anyone to experience in his shoes.
I can't say that Jett's memory will win out, but my parents wavered and left the cult for 10 years. Then I grew up, and well- that's a whole long story.
I feel sad for Travolta, and I really hope that his heart recovers from his loss. With or without the cult.
But if he does leave the cult, I for one, would support his career in any way I can.
The rest of organized religion needs to take notes. The way to keep the flock in line is not guilt and fear of the wrath of a vengeful God, but good old-fashioned blackmail.
$cientology is a dangerous negative force and I totally agree that the backlash from attacking Travolta if he were to quit might hopefully expose that fact to a wider portion of the public. I don't have a leg to stand on as far as suggesting a preemptive strike revelation from John Travolta as I live my life in the closet, but it certainly would be a very brave move and at this point hopefully not career diminishing.
I would love to see the fallout if he did, but I do honestly feel bad that he lost a child. I agree with the others that say "do it John". People who still love you, will still love you.
The only way he could successfully break from this cult, is if he, at the same time he denounces them, describes in detail the things they will say about him to ruin him for leaving the church. Then, when those things start appearing in the press, everyone will know it's David Miscavige retaliating, and Scientology will be attacked even more. Anonymous should offer assistance, AFTER Travolta quits them.
honestly, there is no one on earth who would love more than to have travolta renounce sci, declare publicly that he is gay and leave his wife, but it won't happen and here is why:
1) this story is being reported by the daily mail. Stringing together a bunch of stuff which sounds plausible and related doesn't actually make it so. If it did, Intelligent Design would actually be science.
2) If Travolta did snap out of it, he would be "handled" in an attempt to bring him back in line. If he actually managed to break free of this...
3) He would have to make the choice to never see his daughter again. There is no indication his wife wants out, and as sci doctrine commands, once you're out, you never get to speak to those who are in again. I don't honestly believe he is as heartless as all that.
@SugitaAlcimede: I don't know- the court of public opinion would definitely be on Travolta's side when it came to his rights with his family. And Preston really is nothing without Travolta. She owes more to him than to her faith.
As far as him leaving the cult...it's highly unlikely, but it would be a blow that Scientology would have great difficulty overcoming. It would probably reverberate amongst their members-slowly, but surely.
They know that.
I would love to see Scientology 'handle' Travolta- for once allegations of using the audits against the members as blackmail would be out in the open for all to see-laying to rest any doubts of the true intentions of their 'rituals.'
Scientology is so creepy, not just that leader but the entire click. Their PR guy, son of an actress whose name I forget is the worst. I have seen that BBC reporter's tapes on them and they are scary. If they lose John I wonder if Will smith will have no choice but to admit being in. I also suspect Oprah was down with them before as was Usher but I believe they are both out now.
um...i had a 5th grade experience where a friends mom was allowed to die because she refused meds. religion. christian scientist. it still befuddles me. she lost her mother in 5th grade. because she refused meds. my mother could never explain it to me.
I would imagine that guilt is a factor here; if one's religious beliefs even slightly influenced one's medical approach to the wide array of medical issues that his young boy suffered from...well, that would rock anyone's world.
I really feel for him.
We all know that horrible remorseful feeling when we allow someone or some organization to influence our decision making.
For the grays: there is a loony Scientologist comment I want to approve just so you can revel in its lunacy, but for obvious reasons, I'm not going to do that.
@Helennellieforsythe: It's incredibly long, so I'll limit myself to a few choice bits: It begins "None of the Critics of Scientology never take in Mind that Scientology is an actual Science of the Mind that Is actually doing what it promotes it does and that ones records are ony used for an Auditors use."
Also: "Scientology can't and won't make you do anything you don't want to do. That is just an old enemy lie."
And: "Scientology makes one responsible by getting it's members aware of things about themselves. If you chose not to do something about the Mac Truck barreling down on your child, then it is your life and you will have to live live with yourself."
Anyway, the gist of the post as a whole is you can get out of Scientology if you want your children to be run over by trucks, but we can keep your money, sucka!
@Z und Vielpunkt's chick: Sometimes I think Scientology is my favorite religion. Maybe I'll go back to catholicism if they incorporate the aliens and mac trucks.
@Z und Vielpunkt's chick: My favourite from that shit ass dingbat lunacy is "won't want to be kicked out if they have realized what Scientology is really all about. They can handle you if you stick it out and go thru what your going thru. You will come out a bigger better Being."
Followed by "if you don't have any discipline on yourself to get you thru the process. Then you will be no different than the average person in society who continually fails. If one really want to grow he will continually keep doing the processes."
So if you don't have enough discipline, you will fail, just like all those regular schlubs. But not you, you're special. If you make it through you'll be BETTER. You will no longer be a failure.
Not, of course realizing that if you just decided you weren't a failure in the first place, you wouldn't be so weak and pathetic as to need "a process", and end up screaming your insecurities to the world as part of a ridiculous cult.
@minou: You could be on to something. Didn't Tom Cruise make a claim that only Scientologists are qualified to help at the scene of a car accident? It does seem like his MO to refer to vehicular catastrophes in his ramblings.
Everybody thinks it's Scientology that has him in the closet. Methinks it's more like his wife has thrown him in there and nailed the door shut. Without him, she's irrelevant and uncastable and she knows it. Jerry Maguire was her chance to break out and be known as someone other than Travolta's wife. Too bad she's such a phony, transparent, talentless, selfish bitch.
