I had not heard that Romney story and it actually really upset me, thinking about that poor dog. What a fucking asshole.

@bluebears: I hate to point you to the Huckabee dog murdering scandal. I mentioned on another thread that his son had raped and murdered a young dog in the 1990's and a few people knew what I was referring to. His enormously obese eldest son was kicked out of a summer camp for hanging a dog. I think Huckabee was the Governor of Arkansas at the time, and he spun it that his kid was putting an old mangy stray out of its misery. The raping part I might have made up. On the other hand, he never offered any evidence to prove he hadn't raped that poor dog.

Jindal is also an amateur exorcist.

"Strangely, I found myself repeating the Hail Mary until it became a chant. Being a recent convert to Catholicism, I had yet to accept the Catholic doc trines concerning Mary and considered any form of Marian devotion to be idolatry. Though I had never before prayed a Hail Mary in my life, I suddenly found myself incapable of any other form of prayer. Somehow, Mary's intercessions allowed me to find peace during that long night; I knew that I had survived the worst and that I would exit with my faith intact. It terrified me to recall how close I came to turning away from Christ out of fear.

The crucifix had a calming effect on Susan, and her sister was soon brave enough to bring a Bible to her face. At first, Susan responded to biblical passages with curses and profanities. Mixed in with her vile attacks were short and desperate pleas for help...."

Sadly, I think Ron Paul is an intelligent man, with a few off the wall positions. Admittedly, they are significant, but at least he's not a hypocrite or a liar. Isn't it revealing that that makes him near the top of the credibility list among this amazing pile of loons. He's less batshit insane than the rest.

What's really going to hurt Mitt Romney is how similar his health care reform in Massachusetts is to Obama's.

I still think he's going to be the nominee, though.

Who among us can honestly say we haven't tied a friend to the roof of a car before heading out onto the interstate? Granted, they're more compliant if they're imobilized by being rolled up in a carpet. But really, a dog cage will do.

Newt Gingrich's first wife was his high school geometry teacher. She was 26 and he was 19. I'm not sure if they were involved with each other when he was a high school student. It makes for a juicy scandal, maybe. I'm not sure why his curious marital history never really became a liability. He left his first wife while she was receiving cancer treatment, and divorced his second wife to marry his third wife, who is the young staffer with whom he was having an affair during the whole Lewinsky scandal. This dude is definitely a winner.

It could be a combination of all those things. But I don't think it's surprising that he wouldn't run - he was only tempted by Paterson's weakness. The man has no interest in any kind of competitive or difficult election - he only wanted a cakewalk (as Paterson would have been). He is not remotely in the mix for the 2012 presidential nomination, has no interest in actually governing NY State (though, thanks to term limits being extended, he could run for mayor in 2013, god help us all), and can't handle another embarrassing loss. Kornacki had a good piece on Rudy's options in the Observer.

Oh also - Kerik's conviction doesn't exactly remove the political liability for Rudy. The guy was his choice for Sec. of Homeland Security and his longtime business partner.

@kneetoe: You're right, he could have - but he wouldn't have challenged Bloomberg (for whom the term limits were lifted). I think he likes being the sheriff in this town and if he thought the field was weak in four years, he could be tempted by the idea of a comeback. As to whether he'd win, I suspect you are right but don't want to underestimate his loyal following.
