In reply to Time Inc's Pre-Thanksgiving Layoffs
Naturally the horrible murders in the Philippines dwarfs anything else in this post--the enormity of the evil is staggering. But to deal with what my mind can wrap itself around, does anyone else remember when companies--even magazine companies--had sufficient humanity to wait until after the holidays to do layoffs? Now the objective is just to get 'em off the expense side before the new budget kicks in. I always wonder how the executioner executives can watch or read A Christmas Carol unironically.

@TheBusinessGuy: I would argue that it is still before the holidays. After what date would you no longer lay people off? November 1? Labor Day? Yeah, laying someone off on December 15 is kinda prickish, but lets get a handle on extending the holidays t0 over 15% of the year.

On the bright side, at least they were laid off before they did their shopping. In a way, it's probably better than being laid off on January 10. Not that being laid off anytime doesn't suck.

@Pesti-Esti: I think laying someone off two days before Thanksgiving is dickish. What should be the cutoff? In the old days, it was usually November 1.

In reply to Rumors: Staff Shuffles at New York Post, Sports Illustrated
You wanna save Sports Illustrated? GET RID OF TERRY MCDONNELL. The guy sat at Esquire watching circulation fall through the floor, his only real talent being to spend ungodly sums of money on basically nothing and for that he ends up being promoted to SI? I swear to god, the best way to save every magazine out there? Bag the over-paid, over-spending captian of the ship and keep everyone else's jobs.
Tossing McDonnell is perhaps the best example of how this would save the industry.

@manchops: Terry actually "sat at Esquire" doing just the opposite: publishing dozens of literary icons, many of whom are now in the canon thanks in part to Terry's faith in them. Talese, Mailer, McInerney, Salinger, Hunter S. Thompson, Joan Didion, Cormac McCarthy...are you kidding me?

Under Terry's editorship, Esquire was an ASME finalist SEVEN times. Just try comparing Esquire's (well-documented recently by DiGiacomo in VF) pathetic fiction to the work Terry accomplished back then.

    @Immaculate:
    1) Jann promoted Terry because he earned that ME position.
    2) "Personal habits"? You're actually chastising someone who worked at Rolling Stone under Wenner in the early 80s for having fun?
    3) Jann and Terry, to this day, are close friends. If Terry stole anything from Jann, it was a series of classic Hunter S. Thompson anecdotes due to the fact that HST adored Terry and wasn't so fond of Jann.
    4) Nick writes his own novels. Terry is (and will proudly admit it) an editor, not a writer. And an effing legendary one, who works seven days a week, has completely revived si.com (who do you think oversaw the CNN partnership?), and most importantly, a gentleman.

Jealousy doesn't justify idiotic, ignorant bashing of someone you clearly know nothing about.

At least when I got laid off, the Southern Baptist prick delayed from Good Friday (because the Judge hadn't signed off on the closure of a major metro newspaper actually making money and the firing of nearly 1,900 people) to the Monday after Easter. Did I mention he was and still is a rich prick? #aol

We don't actually hate you, and we don't want you to die. Truth is, we need you. Without the mutual rim jobs you and Bill and Rush give each other, what would Democrats have to mock?

Andrew Ross Sorkin, whose DealBook column normally appears on this page, is on a book tour.

The New York Times didn't run its 32-year-old superstar's weekly column. He's now in the UK. And the note (above) suggests that's why his piece didn't appear.

But a usually reliable tipster tells us that wasn't the whole explanation.

"I gather that the New York Times pulled Sorkin's column on Tuesday on the grounds that they thought it was not comprehensible, or not good enough - he had filed his regular column that day but the editors decided not to print it so they put something else in instead."

"Larry Ingrassia - man who issued the statement saying that all was well between Sorkin and the NYT business writers - made the final decision. I don't know what the column was about."

"Sort of interesting in view of the ongoing oldsters vs Sorkin tensions. NYT business desk abuzz about it, of course."
