All things considered, I am far more likely to leave the house and spend money I don't have without cable TV. I can only sit at this desk and type bon mots for so long before I need to be entertained. So I am not surprised!
@SeaBassTian: I did not mean to imply that cable TV was a substitute for human beings. But you can certainly minimize the high cost of social activity by becoming a temporary homebody a few nights each week. Of course, coach potatoes never "get lucky"!
This doesn't surprise me one bit. I am part owner of some multi-family homes in a rather urban area of CT. When we were looking at purchasing new properties, we would check out some that were doozies. Poor, poor people who did not have a pot to piss in. No couch in the family room... usually a mattress or a even a gym mat. However, they would have the hugest mother fucking plasma tv (I mean ENORMOUS -- bigger than 50") plus every satellite tv station out there.
I just don't get it. They have to sit on the floor, their kids don't have shoes, but they had that tv and satellite. I couldn't buy those properties. It was just too sad.
@momof3wildkids: It's sad on many levels; you just know that in many of those homes, television is also the babysitter. The cost per hour is probably much cheaper than having a human around, but the aggregate cost is paid in declining literacy, passivity, and consumerism.
I could live with HBO, but the other 200 channels? They're certainly not helping the bills (or the amount of work I have to do) by playing SVU marathons.
@BookishLookish: Hmmm. Over/under on number of Maker's on the rocks before Bookish loses the undies over an overabundance of "understanding" look(ishe)s is set at 4. I take the under. And I'll be supplying the looks, honey.
