The lede on this story kills me. He parachutes back into Canada after decades abroad - and then complains how boring it is. Sheesh. I myself way preferred Bob Rae - Rhodes Scholar, lifetime public servant, total mensch. I feel like he got a way worse rap for being Premier of Ontario than he ever deserved - frankly, "Rae Days" look sort of brilliant right now. I'm biased because I know and like Bob but his record of public service is amazing, and he just would have been terrific. I'm not entirely sure about Iggy - and I don't quite think the Obama comparison quite holds (though Obamamania does recall Trudeaumania somewhat). This is probably a bit too esoteric for Gawker, but that's okay. I do like the "Canadawesome" tag tho.
@RachelSklar: Total agreement about Bob Rae here. His speech at the 2006 convention was the best. But people are pretty unforgiving regarding perceived Socialists and $$ probs. This was his undoing, i'd say.
Ignatieff's nowhere near becoming PM; he seems afraid to take the necessary steps. He had the opportunity to bring down the Conservative Government after its frankly insulting budget. He passed it up (after spending an exasperating day pretending to deliberate) to "put the Conservatives on probation," which means, "allow them to do exactly what they wanted and show the Liberals to be too weak to mount any serious opposition." At least Samantha Power was ballsy enough to call Clinton a "fucking monster."
@sassmenagerie: Or if he does become PM, it will be by default due to extreme Harper hatred / massive Conservative fucking up.
Libs from NL are going to vote against the budget on principle because it's actually fucking their province over. Ignatieff has no such principle. He wants to be the winner and that is what he cares about. It can't be said enough, he is waaaay too right leaning.
@Alwaystheangel: BAHAHAHAHA!!!! Yup. The only good looking one the team. Now if Belinda was still dabbling in things on the hill, she's give Ms.Ambrose a run for the money!
Most people I know like Ignatieff about as little as they like Harper. We city-dwellers skew left, naturally, and Iggy seems way too conservative for a leader of the Liberal party. I and most people I know are rather warming to the amusingly condescending Jack Layton, leader of the lefter-than-Liberal NDP -- Canada's third party -- who deserves a Gawker feature way more than Ignatieff does.
@Helennellieforsythe: I watched a coworker powder his shiney head one day before he did an in-studio interview at my workplace... and it was the buzz for all of 2 hours. He's an odd duck.
"Now he's the leader of the minority Liberal Party but he's thisclose of leading that party to majority victory in the upcoming months and becoming the country's PM."
The Liberals still trail the Conservatives by eight points in the latest polls. They're virtually flat against their vote share in the last election, while the Conservatives have in fact gained a few points.
For his first foreign visit, Barack Obama has wisely chosen Canada, February 19th. (He apparently already has a big pre-visit team in Ottawa "arranging things".) Canada is happy to be the non-threatening choice , taking the heat off every other nation in the world who would have been the brunt of jealousy had he chosen them to host himself, creating a mountain of resentment that might overshadow and even threaten future G7, G8, G20, etc get-togethers where the economic health of the world is at stake.
@Aaron Altman: Ok, so that whole "turn the national treasury into a hedge fund" idea didn't work out. But I like the back-up plan - U.K., if you want any hope of ever seeing all your checking account and pension money again, BAIL US OUT! (We will bring your government down Gordon Brown!)
Nice post, Mr. Stein. However as a Canadian will point out the Iggy is probably a bit right of Obama. He was the public intellectual who supported W's war in Iraq and has indicated he at one point held pro-torture views. Personally i'd prefer someone a lot more left than Iggy.
Though I do love that we have someone book smart at the table, it's very exciting. That said, it is very unlikely Ignatieff will take a majority in the next election -- he will probably win a minority. He may get to majority status the next election though. We Canadians love our Liberal governments on the whole
Oh, and leave Toronto alone! It's a Canadian city and nothing like NYC.
Being from the West originally as i am, i'd have to say the Liberals still held strong before the Sponsorship Scandal where i'm from. I don't want to point fingers at any region of Canada the way our current government loves to do so heartily. However I will say that not everyone in the West feels the need to be neo-Con. Only a certain political party currently in power is behind this West as separate movement. Ahem.
And let me reiterate, i am no Liberal -- being far too liberal for the likes of them. Heheh.
@sparklylegwarmers: Personally, I dislike all our political parties... as a young voter, none of them inspired me during the election, but I voted anyways for the candidate that I thought would cause the least damage to my constituency. Plus, she's hotish... for a politician.
Unlike Obama, Igantieff was in favor of the Iraq war. He wrote a prominent NYT Magazine article in favor of invasion in January 2003.
He then sorta, halfway apologized for it in another NYT Magazine article in 2007, where he basically argued that as an academic, he has no responsibility and people shouldn't have taken him seriously.
Ignatieff needs to do something about Canadians calling themselves "Americans" when they're abroad. You know, to get out of diplomatics rows and such. It's unseemly!
@Aaron Altman: Haha. Yeah, what a difference an election makes. Canadians have now taken to wearing American patches on their backpacks when abroad. Such a friendly conversation-starter!
@No Day Like Friday: Is Toronto the New York of Canada? Is New York the Chicago of the East? All three can stand alone on their individual merits, thank you very much.
@No Day Like Friday: Is Toronto Canada's New York? Right now (noon, post Sunday morning run) the downtown core is dead. Empty. As in, no one there but a few tourists. So, no.
@No Day Like Friday: Yes, although people in Calgary and Montreal will bitterly dispute that because it's part of the national psyche to loathe Toronto. The West in particular has an irrational and almost insane hatred of Toronto. So yes, in that way, totally Canada's New York!

Hahahahahahaha! Someone's actually trying to make a prediction about the future of Canadian politics, this made my day. Our political system up north is so volatile at the moment, that frankly, I could state that the Bloc Québécois could be leading the country to a majority government in the next election.

We Canadians IN EASTERN CANADA love our Liberal governments on the whole.
Out west it's a different story.
