    Hmmm... I don't know Sara, but it sounds like she just got a karmic payback. Many very talented people can't make a fucking dime in publishing these days because the doors guarding the sacred ring of success are manned by people who do things like decide, without reading a ms, that it isn't worthy -- of publication, or their valuable editing time or a *star* or whatever it is that they are in charge of.

    So Sara, now you know the secret: when you're desperate to get work and people know it, some of them enjoy your situation no matter how good you are. You reinforce their superiority and in the end it really isn't worth your time to deal with assholes, is it?

    Trip Gabriel truly gets off on treating "little" people -- clerks, copy editors, etc. -- like shit, so how much joy might he get in being like that to someone with a "name"?

    Then again, I don't think "I'm sorry," however insincere, is in his vocabulary.

    She seems quintessentially annoying.

    Having said that, she's recently written a bunch for the Daily Beast and a bit for the LA Times. I'm guessing the asshole editor is from the LAT, and the Daily Beast "posted" her piece immediately.

    Let me be the first to say that almost everyone I know in the publishing industry was quite happy that Sara got fired.

    And why is that?

    Because she stayed too long in the job, played favorites and let the power go to her head. Several years ago I edited a first-time novelist who was supposed to be given a "starred" review and Sara removed the star.

    Although she admitted to me on the phone that she had not read the book, she "sensed" that it was not worthy of PW's "spotlight."

    Journalist in general start to believe that the power of their magazine/newspaper somehow means that people actually care about their personal insights, etc.

    Now back to our regular broadcast: Kari Ferrell... all the time.

    @Perhaps Not:

    Have you read PW? There are a handful of starred hardback books in every issue. The star may seem like a minor point to people not in publishing, but it really does help you with library sales and advance orders.

    The novel I'm mentioned got an all-out rave from the reviewer. A real "money" review. Normally, it would get a star. But, for a variety of personal reasons, Sara didn't like the writer.

    Yes, this sounds trivial. But it felt like I was talking to the Queen on the phone. I hung up, and screamed FUCK YOU! -- scaring my intern.

    Smithhimself is a cynical bastard with a bad liver, but (don't tell anyone) some editors actually care about our writers.

    Now can we PLEASE go back to Keri?

    Why do we have to be one or the other? That's so Kierkegaardian, and Michael Hirschorn reads Nabokov. Why not go the Hirschorn route -- Atlantic contributing editor and former TV executive and founder of the TV production company. TV is so much cooler than EITHER public radio OR the magazine industry, and the gravitas of The Atlantic washes away some of the meh of reality tv.
