But what the hell is up with Sling Blade Jr. in front of him there?

Voting yesterday took some real effort. There were only like 3 different races on the ballot. In that situation, you get the diehards. And in Georgia, the white, rural diehards outnumber the black and urban white diehards by a large number.
(Still, my mostly black neighborhood's polling place was surprisingly busy when I voted.)

It's not that ridiculous to see this and think, 'Huh, his hand's on her chest. Wait, his hand's on her chest?' That doesn't take a distorted or perverted mind, it's just an observation that, hey, that's kind of awkward.
Plus, it's even less ridiculous to think that even a moderately competent political adviser would be able to look at that ad and think, 'Well shit, someone on the internet is inevitably going to go apeshit over this, can we just reshoot it to prevent such a ridiculous but nevertheless unpleasant story?'

@KurticusMaximus: We don't have moderately competent political advisors down here.

Here, Miller challenges Chris Matthews to a duel... really...

Someone once told me WV is the last place in America where you can legally marry your cousin. But I doubt any state has a law against that.
In almost every Jane Austen novel first cousins were marrying first cousins after all.

There's enough negatives about Chambliss without having to taint his granddaughter's memory of the ad or their relationship. She and the rest of his family should be left out of it.

If anyone in the campaign had an iota of brains they'd have re-shot it. If his granddaughter is traumatized, which with all due respect I kind of doubt -- thoroughly embarrassed, maybe, but traumatized seems a little hyperbolic -- I put it at the door of the person who chose to make a mascot out of a little girl, not the people who happened to notice how clumsily and creepily he did it.

Personally, I wouldn't allow my children to be used for political gain either. However, they all do and usually w/out the suggestion of molestation coming into play. Surely there's a line, even on wonderfully snarky sites, that says rape, sexual abuse, and molestation accusations should be handled with care. Michael Jackson jokes: okay. Inferring pedophilia where none exists: not okay.

Eudora Welty and her insane, attic dwelling relatives disapprove this ad...

After some cursory looking, I haven't been able to find an age for the child online. She's anywhere between 11 and 13 from the looks of her. I'd have been horrified to be grabbed that way at that age, and I think many other girls would as well. I don't think Chambliss meant to be creepy, but he very much was by many people's estimation, and the people who work for him are definitely incompetent, and it's they and no one else who exposed this child to embarrassment.

Do you see something wrong with this photo as well then?
I see a loving family photo.
The ad is creepy, but due to the politics of the family involved, not inappropriate touching. It seems sketchy and opportunistic to suggest anything more, which is I'm sure why it never even crossed the mind of the (granted) incompetent staff.
