    @juustuunder: Protection for the children of former Presidents ends at age 16, according to Wackypedia.

    My count is this:

    The former Presidents and First Ladies add up to ten; the Obamas would be five, including mother-in-law; the Bidens are at least two (Joe & Jill) with another three to six possibles (Beau and wife, Hunter and wife, and Ashley and ???).

    The Cheneys would have lost their detail over the summer, unless Napolitano has extended their protection. (Insert hunting joke here.)

    Pelosi's protective detail comes from the Capitol Police, unless I'm mistaken.

    So my numbers don't add up, but they're a good start.

    @Little Green Frog (Wise Latina): It's quite likely that she receives Secret Service protection, being second in the line of succession. I haven't found anything on the Secret Service's website explicitly stating that the Speaker gets a detail, but it's no great leap to make that inference.

    In the meanwhile, my mad Google Fu skillz dredged up an item in USN&WR from July stating that Cheney's protection has been extended, although there's no indication for how long, or whether the extension applies to his wife and daughters.

    So, let's say that we have the 10 formers, five Obamas, at least five Bidens, Deadeye Dick, and Madame Speaker, for a total of 22. Add the wives of Biden's sons, and we get to the publicized total of 24 people with full-time details.

    Now, who wants to speculate on the lucky eight who get part-time Secret Service protection? #barackobama

    @7states: In general, members of Congress are protected by the Capitol Police. Pelosi as Speaker would be a special case, and I haven't been able to find any discussion of arrangements for the President pro tem of the Senate. #barackobama

    You should do an Updated Update to better reflect the link is to the developer of the facebook application, not the actual poll (see #2 in his list). Way it reads makes it seem like Vann admitted to creating the poll in question.

    I can't vouch for the accuracy, but supposedly this is the break down:
    * Yes: > 5%
    * Maybe: 2.6%
    * Health care: 1.9%
    * No: 90%

    @lostarchitect: Yeah, that's one of their arguments. Those 9/12'ers say things like "jeez, what if hospitals were run like the DMV? We'd wait in line for years to get treated." Cause you know, the DMV is guverrment run, and therefore everything the guverrment touches is ineffiecent. They blow up stories like the 22 year old hope-to-die alcoholic who was denied a liver transplant (cause he was dying of cirrhosis) because England's socialized healthcare didn't have enough livers to go around and he was a very high risk of doing it again. Or else they just make up stories i.e. "Death Panels." I'm sure that somewhere, someone is convinced that Obama is going to cut their healthcare; the same person lynches a census worker cause "he's with the guverrment."

    @bens: They also argue that we don't have enough doctors to treat everyone, so that if everyone had health care that paid for preventative care (i.e. annual physicals), there wouldn't be enough doctors to perform the work. Of course, that sort of cuts into the right wing's "let the market work itself out" mantra, because if the demand for doctors goes up, then under the conservative theory more people would become doctors.

    @misslinda: Except that implicit in the dems health plan is the fact that doctors will not make as much money, be under increased legal burdens and work harder longer hours. So fewer people will look to become doctors. Its a fact, one of the reasons(not the only), people become doctors is because it is a high paying career. If you take away some of the ability to accumulate wealth, people are going to look to other professions. Then you either have a shortage of doctors or you start seeing underqualified people becoming doctors. And its not just the DMV, its the postal service, Amtrak, medicare, medicais, social security, etc. Not ONE of these government run plans is in the black. THEY all lose money. So the smart thing would definitely be to let the government run healthcare. Luckily it seems like people are getting wise to the idea, that we do not want the knuckleheads in charge of our wellbeing.

    @Lance Uppercut: Right, just like being a lawyer is a high paying career, yet I'm still waiting to see my six figure payday. Your argument is a falacy and a red herring in the healthcare debate. The doctors I know do it because they love it, not for the money, which they now know is not the payday that teevee doctors always seem to have.
