wow. They went from 727 ad pages in 2007, to 607 in 2008, and now 400 pages in 2009?
Conde thought they were so brilliant a couple of years ago, with that big Sept. issue - turns out they were just another bull market phenomenon where it's not so tough to do well. Now they're hiring McKinsey, firing receptionists, etc. because the top line isn't growing, so the only way they can make up for their lousy ad sales is to chop in the middle.
I have a couple of relatives working at different magazines there, both of whom said Richard Beckman was demoted because "he was a lousy salesman, he could only do well in a good market". But hey - sure - keep the guy on staff after he abuses women, but fire him if he can't make $$.
The employees don't deserve what's happening, but the higher-ups sure do.
