@ihatetwitter: That doesn't surprise me. There is nothing more mealy mouthed than the "Fox News with a Friendly Face" positioning CNN has been trying out for the last few years. Liberals are no longer amused and conservatives are too stupid to see that, with the possible exception of Rick Sanchez and the old cranky guy, it's a lot of unchallenged conservative blather--contrary to what they've been programmed to believe by the conservative hive mind. And since the last thing cable news offers is news, people who watch choose to watch the 24-hour opinion channel that most aligns with their own beliefs.

Fox finally learned that employing only pitiful, zombie lefties isn't the way to go, and that everyone has a TV set, not just red-staters. So, they let Shep and his Q rating be the supposed opposition leader instead of Alan "Skeletor" Colmes.

Trouble is, thanks to their audience getting twice as loony over having a black prez, they are getting too cocky/reckless, and providing him with too much ammo on a daily basis. It could also be that he's getting fed up and will be taking an hour from Wolf Blitzer on CNN sometime soon...his neighbor Anderson Cooper might think that's just fab...

I'm pretty sure Shep's "moments of responsibility and balance" are just strategic and encouraged by the network. The stunts get Shep interviews full of sloppy kisses by publications like Esquire and the New York Times where they go in about how independent and wonderful he is and he goes on about how FOX is totally balanced except for a few shows that are plainly opinion. FOX people never get invited for profile interviews normally by the regular media, let alone the sort of fawning Shep has been getting.

And FOX needs someone to point to as a at least vaguely lefty or fair sort of presence now that Colmes is gone. #foxnews

If anything, this is about as contrived a set-up as is televisually possible.

The only thing Shep Smith and his schtick serves to illuminate is that Fox '' News'' is pure theatre. Everything is for show.
