@wholenuther: Having Bush say your dumb is like having Sarah Palin say your dumb on national TV except she now says she didn't, despite the video evidence to the contrary, so why can't you support the troops by not makin' stuff up?
All this proves is most human beings with even the slightest, ham-fisted ability to process rational thought believed Palin to be a disaster. I'm sure if you offered Bushie a shiny quarter after making that statement his attention would have shifted.
Everyone in the room seemed to look at him in horror, their mouths agape. Governor Camacho of Guam, who was in the room at the time, asked quite audibly, "Seriously?"
I have never believed W is stupid or even close to it. He is a terrible speaker and has a most difficult time addressing issues in a manner that elicits confidence. When he is in a spontaneous environment, such as; following 9-11, addressing the firefighters at ground zero, his resolve and compassion come through quite clearly. Bush, I believe, was a man who truly cared about the country but wasn't able to lead the country. History will be kinder to him than the impression of most Americans today.
@LaniCrius: "following 9-11, addressing the firefighters at ground zero, his resolve and compassion come through quite clearly."
Remember how he sat with a children's book in his hand in that classroom for an inappropriately long time? Or the time he circled around New Orleans in AF1 after Katrina? You mean that resolve and compasion in a "spontaneous environment"?
@LaniCrius: I second this. It's hard to do so without endorsing him. I don't agree with, endorse, or even like Bush. Anything. But he wasn't dumb. He was just a mediocre leader, organizer, and speaker. Which added up to a terrible presidency.
@LaniCrius: If by "resolve and compassion" you mean "complete willingness to ignore death and destruction, an inability to recognize or empathize with human suffering (let alone deal with it) and a zeal for sending soldiers to die needlessly", then YES, he certainly has those things. Thanks for the perspective!
@LaniCrius: Agreed. Bush is not dumb. He's illiterate and not curious, and he has no interest in ideas, but he's not dumb. And I'm not being sarcastic.
