For a normal movie, this wouldn't mean anything. but if an Oscar-bait film that was scehduled for October gets pushed back to February, it only means one thing: it's a dog. Woof.

They can use "Silence Of The Lambs" being released in Feb as an excuse all they want, it was dumped there because the studio didnt think it was any good. Now this may turn out to be great, but it's obvious Grey doesn't think so. Too bad, its a great book.

Wow, Brad Grey's 100-word "explanation" is pure nonsense. Shutter Island had no competition the weekend of its skedded October release. Obviously, the film is crap.

Would it have killed them to throw a few million from Transformers and GI Joe's marketing budget to a film by Martin Freaking Scorsese?

That whole "economic climate" line is bizarre. Everyone in the world knows that a February release is where a movie goes to die. Oh well.

@SpyMagician: There's one A-List movie they're begging people to ignore. [gawker.com] But how do you expect to hide a Scorsese-DiCaprio project?

@Glib and Bitchy: Maybe so many people will be unemployed come February 2010 all they will have to do is go to the movies.

Well they must have wasted about a billion dollars in marketing, because I feel like I've been exposed to that trailer approximately 75 times.

(also, I would almost definitely have seen it in October, but the Drew fangirl inside of me is totally psyched that her roller derby movie has no other competition that weekend)

You're letting Brad Grey get away with the bad economy excuse? More likely a bad movie. If Grey thought this movie gave him any chance to take credit for another Oscar, it would have stayed in October.

@Gabriel Snyder: What about the Clooney excuse? Does Paramount care enough about awards and/or think Clooney's bankability is enough to make Up in the Air the centerpiece of their Fall release schedule?

@Foster Kamer: Did you read the Times' take-down of the bankability of big stars? Clooney's old-timey football movie -- what was it called, Leatherheads? -- tanked. Up in the Air is a very shaky bet.

@MrInBetween: I'd agree, but they think it has awards potential, which is why - for the moment - I'll bite.

Is Scorsese sleeping with Leo? First DeNiro, now DeCaprio. There is a joke there but I'm too sleepy from lunch.

I would see this anyway for the effect, it's different to my standards and it's a great way to say in shape.

...Sorry I watch the flash flood episode of Family Guy and this cyclist dying of rectal cancer would say that at the end of every sentence.

Honestly. Whether or not the book or movie was good, what would compel people to just give the whole thing away without being prompted to?

I'm sure they had a name for this condition by now.

I mean it's not even like the movie is Harry Potter or anything in which you get a slight dark joy from killing the souls of pottertards. This is a random movie that no one is writing in their calendar about.
