I was just reflecting on the "mandate" speech that George W. gave in 2004. Anyone remember that one? When he said his narrow victory gave him the "mandate" to do whatever he wanted?

The past four years have been a national political nightmare for me. I might hold my breath ALL DAY.

An interesting question would be the candidates' speeches. Generally the network call is their go-ahead: loser's concession first, then the victor's speech. Will Obama be comfortable claiming victory before the west coast is finished voting?

No way Texas goes to Obama? My wife and I would like to disagree.

And can we please ditch the electoral college crap already, and just go with the popular vote? I get so sick of hearing about Florida and Ohio during the elections, and repeatedly being told that my vote here in Texas is essentially a waste of effort.

Because it is assumed Texas will vote a certain way, neither candidate visited the state. And do you know how many times I've heard people say they're not bothering to vote because they live in Texas? A lot! The electoral college, in my opinion, actually discourages people from getting out there and voting. Is there a valid reason to retain the electoral college as opposed to going to a popular vote?

@Islandkiwi: The Electoral College is especially crazy right now because it can result in a tie, and the tiebreaker goes to the House of Representatives rather than the popular vote. If they don't want to throw out the EC, maybe they should award bonus electoral votes for every X vote differential. Then, at least, the popular vote would count for something.

@Technician: I was telling a dude at my church the other day that it wouldn't be any fun for Obama to win if I wasn't around some republicans at the time, so I could see their reaction. A challenge when we will hear the results at like, 1 am our time.

Turns out he is like, chair of the freakin republican party locally, and he boght me a ticket to the swanky bi-partisan election night party they're putting on.

@RoosiDesi: Well, to answer your question I'd have to get my butt off this couch and out to the polls, which I am reluctant to do until 5:55 a.m. Generally there are very few people there when the polls open but this election should be different. Every second person on the Upper West Side is trying to recruit everyone else to volunteer for Obama so I anticipate long lines. I'd like to take advantage of the free Starbucks coffee but coffee + small bladder + long wait = not a good idea.

People are being told to bring video cameras to document any election problems but I'm figuring we won't see any vote suppression shenanigans here in NY. And since I don't own a video cam it all works out very well for me.
